"Great.  They were there first thing in the morning, explained everything they did and answered all of our questions.  Diagnosed the cause of the problem which another plumber could not do.  Have had no problems since.

"After having a great experience with Basement Waterproofing Solution completing all of our basement problems - it was a no brainer to use them again for our crawlspace project.  Our 100+ year old house's crawlspace had previously been the home to several oil tanks so was full of smelly oily sand that stank out the entire basement.

With the help of Brian's team, we turned the nasty sandpit into a huge odor free storage space.  The team poured about 4-6" of concrete after leveling the remaining crawlspace sand, which also provides much better support for the above sun room.  Also added concrete into perimeter cinder blocks, to hold back dirt and completely enclose the room. They installed a vapor barrier on top of the sand - so no more oil smells make there way into the house.

The crawlspace looks fantastic now - it's a completely usable space and the cost was exceptionally competitive.  I would absolutely recommend them for any concrete and crawlspace work - through the process of renovating our house, they are the easiest and most professional contractors I've worked with.  Brian also offered a lot of advice for other projects on our house and was able to put us in contact with some great contractors - it's made a huge difference for us completing our overly ambitious home renovations.

Thanks Brian and Jim!"

"Takes for ever to get a return a call. Also took a week to get someone out for repairs. They said they would reimburse me for septic repairs and it took over 3 months for that to happen."

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

Normally, when your well pump turns on or off, you’ll hear a small click. This isn’t anything to worry about, but it can be a problem if it’s clicking continuously. This can indicate that the well pump is short cycling—the pump continuously turns on and off.

This can wear out the motor and provide uneven water flow. If this happens, you may need to get it looked at by a well pump professional to see if you need to repair the switch or pump.

A septic tank riser should extend to just above the ground level or slightly above it. The exact height can vary depending on local regulations and personal preferences, but a common guideline is to have the riser's top flush with or no more than a few inches above the surrounding ground. This height allows for easy access to the septic tank without creating a tripping hazard or obstructing mowing and landscaping activities. It's essential to ensure that the riser lid is easily visible and accessible for regular maintenance and inspection while being mindful of safety and aesthetics.

A properly installed and maintained septic drain field (also known as a leach field) can last up to 50 years, though the average is around 20 years. However, factors like poor soil conditions, heavy usage, or improper maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan to 15-20 years.

To extend the life of your drain field:

  • Schedule Regular Inspections: Have the entire septic system, including the drain field, inspected every two to five years to catch problems early.

  • Protect the Area: Avoid driving heavy vehicles or placing heavy structures over the drain field. Plant only grass or other lightweight vegetation with shallow roots over the area.

  • Maintain the Septic Tank: Proper care of the septic tank, including regular pumping and avoiding harmful chemicals, prevents strain on the drain field.

Be aware of signs of failure, such as strange odors, standing water, or unusually lush grass over the field, which indicate your system may need professional attention.

Talking with a septic pro before planting trees near your tank is best to ensure the roots won’t interfere with your septic system. However, there is an easy way to figure out where to plant a tree—but you’ll need to know how tall it can get when it’s fully grown. For instance, if the tree can reach 50 feet, plant it at least 50 feet from your septic system.

Deciding between an engineered septic system and a conventional one depends on property size, soil quality, local regulations, and environmental factors. If your property has limited space, poor soil, or is close to sensitive environmental features, an engineered system may be required. Professional site evaluations, considering water usage, long-term plans, and budget constraints, can help determine the appropriate choice. Consulting with a septic system professional is crucial for ensuring compliance with regulations and selecting the best system for your property's unique needs.
