Residential Home Inspections and radon testing. Before i became a home inspector I built houses for 15+ years. I decided to open this small family owned business because I find joy in helping people understand their huge investment in buying a house.

"Installed radon mitigation system in basement. Pros: 1) reduced overall radon levels by about 75% 2) they did the work in extreme cold temps 3) done in about 4 hours Cons: 1) They arrived late (although they did call to let me know) 2) they did not wear boot covers or put down any floor protector when walking on my carpet 3) they set dirty toolboxes and caulk guns directly on carpet 4) exhaust pipe is too close to roof peak and can be seen from street view of house Overall, good job. I can live with seeing the pipe from the street. I would recommend based on the overall work."

Radon Detection and Reduction questions, answered by experts

Long-term exposure increases lung cancer risks. Prolonged homestay individuals and smokers encounter heightened vulnerability and exposure concerns.

Costs depend on property size, test types, and additional services like mold sampling.

Radon is present almost everywhere but, like sunlight, the concentration levels and how often you are exposed to it have a large part to play in just how dangerous it is. There are levels of radon that are acceptable inside a house, but above a certain limit, radon becomes a serious radioactive hazard that is a known cause of lung cancer. In fact, radon exposure is the number two leading cause of lung cancer (after smoking).

Keeping radon from getting into your home is much better than having to get rid of it once it's already indoors. While there may not be a way to fully prevent radon from getting into your home, there are things you can do to reduce the gas's ability to enter.

Sealing foundation cracks and openings can help keep the gas from seeping inside. Improving air flow, such as by opening windows, can also be helpful. If you're building your home from scratch, talk to your contractor about using radon-resistant construction to keep the gas out.

If high radon levels are detected, steps include sealing entry points, installing a mitigation system, and retesting the air regularly to ensure reduced levels.
