Customers say: True professional

"overall the workmanship was excellent and I am very happy with the finished product.  We did have some communication issues which did cost me several hours of time and I felt that could have been totally avoided.  When attempting to match fabrics, Rich had given me 3-4 swatch samples to choose from.  Since I do not understand the upholstery business it never dawned on me that they had dozens and dozens of fabric books that I could have looked through.  Rich did not mention it either so I spent the next couple of weeks going to local fabric stores trying to find a suitable fabric.  After little success I informed them that I was kind of stuck and then they mentioned I could look through their books.  I found a suitable fabric in a matter of 20-30 minutes when I looked through their books.  But this also required an additional trip to their shop which is about 1 hour one way.  I also do not like when a company offers what appears to be a blanket discount (which Montalbano does) and then gives you a reason as to why the discount does not apply in your case.  In my case the discount didn't apply to my initial 3-4 swatches because they were being given to me for free.  While this seems to border on a bait and switch tactic in all honesty I don't believe that is Montalbano's intention at all.  It was more likely just a snafu in the way they advertise the discount. "

Small jobs welcome

"They were super helpful and responsive. Fabric choices were almost unlimited. Once the fabric was ordered and arrived, the work was done in five days. They picked up my chairs and delivered them for free. Both chairs look wonderful, and I couldn’t be happier. I might have spent less buying new chairs, but I would have spent time, and wasted gasoline, chasing around finding what I wanted."

"UNBELIEVABLE! PERFECT! WOULD NEVER GO ANYWHERE ELSE! I have used other upholsterers and can not believe my good fortune in finding Riverside. Normally quoted 4-6 weeks, it was done on a week and a half. (Actually earlier than my needed by date) I originally just wanted one chair done, but because Val gave me such a good impression I brought her two other items. She recommended Tandy leather (where I found just what I needed for the bench). The second chair is an antique, they disassembled, reglued, reupholstered and it is gorgeous. I wish I had additional items for her to do."

"We have actually used this provider a couple of times, but most recently we had an emergency in which one of our dogs ate a bag of white chocolate morsels and proceeded to throw up in every single room of our house (no one was home).  She threw up in places like the middle of a sofa (efficiently and effectively soiling 4 cushions as well as the base of the sofa) and an upholstered chair (again, hitting the seat cushion, back, and base).  Keith and his technicians came on two occasions to clean up the mess, which I honestly did not think could be done.  The rugs and chair and sofa are cleaner than ever before, and we have our home back.  Keith's prices are very fair, and he is very accommodating to his customers' schedules.

"Although I live in Alaska, Premium Leather helped me solve a cleaning problem with my ultra suede couch.  Mailing leather items to repair, dye or clean is a wonderful solution for people who live in an area where no leather cleaners exist.  I highly recommend premium leather

"The repair person was on time. He discussed with me the options for cleaning and repairing the sofas and chairs that needed work.  He explained what could and could not be done and gave a quote for the work. There were a total of nine pieces in all that needed attention.  He agreed to do the work in two visits and to split the cost between those two visits, which was easier on my budget. In some cases he needed to mix a dye to cover bad scratches in the leather, and the color was right on.  He took time to go over the finish as often as needed to bring up the luster in the leather. He worked clean, so no mess was left behind. Although I think some of the furntiure took a bit more work than anticipated in the initial quote, the charge did not exceed the quote. We were totally pleased with the finished work.

Upholstering questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can reupholster antique furniture, and it’s a great way to extend the life of your pieces and keep them looking fresh and new for years to come. In fact, since reupholstering furniture is significantly more affordable than replacing it, reviving antique furniture can be a cost-effective way to keep that family heirloom usable for much longer. It’s usually a good idea to leave antique reupholstering to a professional, as they will have the tools and expertise to ensure the piece isn’t damaged and looks professionally finished.

It is often worthwhile to refinish or restore furniture, especially for high-quality, older, antique, or sentimental pieces. Older furniture tends to have better durability than modern, mass-produced items, and refinishing can cost about one-third of the price of replacement. To determine if it's cost-effective, compare quotes from local refinishing services with the price of a new, similar piece. Refinishing can refresh a piece's look and extend its lifespan. However, it may not be worth it for newer furniture made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or plywood, or for items with major structural damage. A professional can help you assess the piece and decide on the best course of action.

If your couch is damaged, you are not out of options. You might try fixing it on your own, bring in a furniture repair specialist, or opt to get rid of it responsibly. Depending on its condition, you could donate, sell, recycle, or drop it off at a local scrap facility.

Doing your own upholstery work is possible, but it’s typically a better idea to leave the work to professionals. Without experience and the proper tools, it’s difficult to get a professionally finished appearance for your furniture, and many DIYers end up spending money on tools and materials only to hire a professional when they can’t get the fabric to look right. If you have reupholstery experience, feel free to give it a shot. However, if you’re not confident in your skill level or you’re working with antiques, it’s worth the money to hire a pro.

It is possible to reupholster directly over old material in some cases, and it can save you a bit of money. If you are going to go this route, make sure you use a darker color than you had previously. Otherwise, you might see the old fabric beneath the new material. You should also keep in mind that reupholstering over old material is only possible with certain materials. For example, reupholstering over leather usually isn’t possible. You can ask your professional to see if this is an option for your piece.
