Yes, a bigger well pump can increase water pressure—up to a point. If you currently have a well pump of 8 GPM, you might notice a pressure boost when you go up to 10 GPM. However, overshooting significantly (going up to 15 GPM for an 8 GPM home) can strain your well system and result in things like burst pipes that can decrease your water pressure and make for costly repairs.

Different plumbing problems can cause your P-trap to leak. The biggest problems are loose nuts and misaligned pipes. Over time, your P-trap can leak due to the rush of water moving through the pipes, which in turn loosens the nuts and causes the pipes to fall out of alignment. Other problems include worn rubber O-rings and cracked pipes.

You should leave the water dripping when temperatures are below 20 degrees for three hours or longer or your power goes out in the winter. Leave the water dripping until temperatures are consistently above 20 degrees and you’ve checked for frozen pipes. With water movement in your pipes, ice is less likely to form, and your pipes are less likely to burst. The drip relieves pressure, preventing burst and leaking pipes.

You can prevent pipes from bursting by taking several preventive measures. For example:

  • Keep your pipes from freezing when temperatures drop by setting your thermostat to 55 degrees or higher.

  • Open under-sink cabinets to allow warm air to flow around the pipes. 

  • Let faucets drip to keep water moving.

  • Add insulation to crawl spaces or pipes to keep them warm.
