"Hoss gave us a reasonable price and started work a few days later. We had a shallow bathtub, plastic surround, and old tiled walls and floor removed. He has a young, hard working crew. They installed a deep bathtub, tile surround and floor, new drywall and paint. They were fast efficient and cleaned up before leaving everyday. We love our new bathroom. The average cost tends to be higher than ceramic tile because porcelain tile is very durable. Porcelain tile rating also factors into the material cost. Tile ratings are as follows:

  • Grade 0: Walls only

Add a T-shaped spacer to each corner of a tile when placing it. You’ll want to nudge the tiles closer together so the spacers are touching each corner. When you’re done installing your tile, you can remove each spacer, wash them, and use them for your next project.

You cannot tile directly over hot mop waterproofing because tile requires a smooth, solid surface to adhere properly. Additionally, the shower bed pan needs to be raised and sloped toward the drain to prevent water from pooling. However, you can hot mop and apply a sloped mortar bed over the top (to which the tile can then be adhered). 

You can, in theory, tile your fireplace hearth with most tiles. However just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. For example, it’s much better to use unglazed tiles because glazed tiles are more resistant to cracking under extreme heat. Porcelain is more heat-resistant than ceramic, but you can still design the hearth as you like by putting the most heat-resistant tiles directly under the fire and, if it matches your style, add more decorative tiles further from the center of the fire. 

Ceramic tile can be slightly less expensive than porcelain pavers. You can find outdoor ceramic tile for as little as $1 per square foot, but high-end options tend to cost the same as porcelain.
