"They were honest by explaining to me why I shouldn't blow insulation into my walls because the siding is wood and would cause mold issue. Other companies would do the work even though they shouldn't."

"Jeff Smith is based at the Waterloo office. He was very good at customer service & responded to my emails in a reasonable time given this is probably a busy time of the year (November) for them. I am having additional blow in insulation behind a knee wall & in the attic to bring me up to code. The work has not been completed yet. I am waiting for an energy audit. That is why I can only rate the company as a 3."

"I was really pleased with them. Insurance covered it. The price was very reasonable. They were wonderful. Rick was really personable and he really watched his crew. He made sure that everything was what I expected. I did need to have some follow up work done on the chimney and he did that and also did some insulation. Every time I called him, he answered immediately. The price was comparable to another estimate I got. I got more for my money from him. The roof looks good and it appears to be quality work. He and his crew were here when they said. He came over a couple of times to check. He was very professional. I would use him again and I would recommend him."

"Roberto was the technician and he was very professional, polite, and personable. He inspected the rest of our system and told us things that needed to be changed or repaired. He showed me pictures of everything. Everything he told me about was accurate. He quoted me a price for R38 insulation , Some of our ducts were plastic and he recommended them to be changed. I agreed completely and didn't know they were plastic. I would have had them done the work but I had no price comparisons to make and besides I didn't have the money right then. So he just finished the vent cleaning and left his card. He did a great job on the vent cleaning and was happy with the work."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

The lifespan of insulation depends on the material type. Fiberglass can last between 80 and 100 years, but it is important to start checking it around the 15-year mark. Spray foam has a lifespan of up to 100 years, and mineral wool can last up to 100 years. Cellulose, an eco-friendly option, has a lifespan of 20 to 30 years.

Ductwork sweats due to a temperature difference between the air inside the ducts and the surrounding air, similar to how a cold drink develops condensation in the heat. This sweating is a sign that your HVAC system is not operating at peak efficiency. The best way to keep ductwork from sweating is to wrap it in proper insulation, which also improves your system's energy efficiency. Another option is to close off your crawl space and install a dehumidifier to dry the air and lower its dew point.

A plastic vapor barrier should completely cover your basement to prevent water from penetrating through the walls. This typically goes before installing insulation to prevent moisture from building up and becoming trapped on the inside of your insulation, where it can collect and lead to mold damage. Installing insulation after the vapor barrier allows for any moisture to exit the walls for better ventilation.

You should not put fiberglass insulation in basements, since fiberglass is known to trap mold and mold is more commonly grown and produced in basements. You should also avoid placing insulation near water heaters, oil burners, or other hot appliances. For more information about the best and worst places to install insulation, consider hiring an insulation professional.

Asphalt roofs provide better insulation than metal roofs, but that doesn’t always mean that asphalt roofs are better for reducing heating and cooling bills. In hotter climates, metal roofs will usually be better for home efficiency because the material reflects more sunlight and reduces solar heat gain. In colder climates, asphalt roofs are sometimes superior in terms of efficiency because they introduce more solar heat gain to your home and have greater insulating capabilities. However, metal roofs installed with an air gap can provide similar levels of insulation.
