"Legacy replaced 7 windows, including a picture window on our main level. Quality, price and installation were all good. Install crew very professional and willing to work around us and our household. One window had a crack at install and was replaced under warranty in 4 weeks. However, this company has a HUGE issue with customer service. After providing a >50% down payment, we heard NOTHING from them. With all the derecho fraud, one couldn't help but wonder if this would happen to us. I would text and call 2-3 times before I would receive a return call or text about our installation. I never received any updates about our install or our warranty replacement without having to contact Legacy multiple times. Then, when my husband called, he received a return call in less than 24 hours. I am working with another vendor for home improvements who text me WEEKLY with project updates after a 20% down payment. If Legacy would implement something similar when a project is close to a promised date, it would certainly lower the number of angry phone calls made to the office. Bottom line, I would recommend Legacy Home Improvements for the cost and workmanship but not for their customer service."

Windows questions, answered by experts

Bay windows are expensive mostly because their above-average size means higher material costs. Unlike bow windows, most bay windows also include casement windows on either side of a picture window, and the opening mechanisms for casement windows drive up costs. You’ll also pay higher labor costs to install a bay window, as you’ll often need multiple technicians to lift the window into place.

Installing energy-efficient windows costs between $325 and $2,000, averaging about $400 per window. You’ll have to consider cost factors like the window’s size, frame material, and type. Labor costs in your area will also impact the overall cost of the project, with window installation professionals charging about $40 per hour on average. Different types of energy-efficient windows include:

  • Single-hung: $150–$2,500

  • Casement: $150–$600

  • Double-hung: $250–$3,000

  • Picture: $200–$650

  • Bay: $480–$1,920

Storm windows are well worth the cost, especially if you live in an area that experiences extreme weather, like hurricanes, a lot of snowfall, or high winds. These windows not only help keep you and your home safe during a storm, but they can also save you thousands in storm and window damage costs.

Yes, egress windows can significantly add value to a home. By making basement and attic areas safer and more livable, they allow you to market these spaces as finished living areas, which increases your property's value. Many homeowners can recover the full installation cost, with some sources citing a return on investment of around 70%. The exact value added depends on your specific home, location, and adherence to local building codes. Beyond financial value, egress windows enhance functionality by adding natural light and comfort. They are also a crucial safety feature, often mandated by building codes to serve as an emergency exit.

There are many signs to look out for that tell you it’s time to replace a double-hung window. If the window is drafty and inefficient, you may need a new window to block out air leaks and keep your utility bills from skyrocketing. Other signs that it’s time to replace a window include foggy glass, soft or broken window frames, or window sashes that won’t open or close easily.
