"FO NOT USE COLONY! They will tell you they can't get a replacement part, and tell you to get a replacement unit. Then months later they will claim they found a part, and tell your insurance it could have been repaired! Whether it's a technical lying saying we need a replacement when we don't, or they are just mad we got a replacement from someone else, either way I'm out THOUSANDS that insurance won't pay for due to their negligence."

"I called to request an appointment for cleaning our air conditioner on a Monday and they were able to do it that Thursday. Service man arrived right on time and was very friendly and personable. Explained all that he did and provided the form to mail in for a rebate from Alliant. Anytime I have to call in to the office, I am treated like we are the only customers they have! "Here are the facts: On at least 3 separate occasions, I have requested that Brandt "please" place me on a scheduled maintenance/service plan so I don't have to worry about remembering to call and schedule it with them. The office staff I spoke to were short and rude about servicing the existing units and scheduling the service. "Doug", the Tech that performed the service both times, assured me that he would have "CJ" (I believe) the service manager contact me regarding my request. Didn't happen. Three strikes and you're out Brandt."

You can take freestanding or wall-mounted fireplaces with you when you leave, so they will have less of an impact on the value of the home.

Although they provide heat, light, and atmosphere, pellet stoves require electricity to run certain parts, which some homeowners may find to be an unfortunate additional expense. They can also produce noises that some may find annoying, like a low rumble from the blower fan or its motor.

The damper, located just above the firebox, can open or close the chimney flue. The damper should remain closed unless there’s a fire burning in the fireplace. Closing the damper prevents energy loss through the chimney and cold air from seeping into the home during the winter. Opening the damper helps maintain airflow when there is a fire and prevents smoke and gases from venting into the house.

In addition to flashing, a roof cricket can help divert water around your chimney so that it drains properly off your roof. It’s shaped like a double triangle and is installed behind the chimney so that falling water spills evenly down each side. This helps prevent water from accumulating behind your chimney, which can increase water damage and the risk of leaks. 

The International Building Code (IBC) requires cricket installation if a chimney built after 2012 measures over 30 inches in width. Chimneys constructed before that date are typically grandfathered in and aren’t required to have crickets installed.

You can close up a chimney instead of demolishing it. Homeowners often go this route because the cost of removing a chimney, especially a structurally important chimney, can be expensive.

Properly closing up a chimney involves closing and sealing the damper, installing a chimney cap damper, and sealing the fireplace opening with a door or bricks. The cost to seal and cap a chimney is around $500 to $650—significantly less than the average chimney removal cost.
