"They did not show up on 2 occassions. The first they said they had an emergency and emailed me at 2:40pm. I set up a second appt for 2 days later, they could not add me to their schedule for the next day. The appt was set for 8:00am. At 8:45 I called and asked where he was, they said on the way. I live 8 mins from their office. At 9:05 I called and cancelled. They later emailed and said they had another emergency call and did not realize my tech has been sent to that. No calls and no one in the office knew this when I called in not once but twice. Poor poor customer service"

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

A fireplace that doesn’t require a chimney is simply called a chimneyless fireplace. Don’t confuse these with ventless fireplaces, however. There are some fireplaces that require ventilation via a system of pipes, not a chimney. More specifically, the fireplace in question will likely be called by its name, such as electric, ethanol, or balanced flue.

Installing a fireplace insert can be complicated and expensive, particularly if modifications are necessary to accommodate it. The cost of purchasing an insert and necessary venting system can also be a significant investment. Fuel type may also be limited with gas or electric inserts, potentially reducing the cozy appeal of a traditional wood-burning fireplace. Maintenance and repair may require specialized services, especially when dealing with gas lines or electrical components. Some argue that fireplace inserts lack the authentic ambiance of an open, crackling fire, with glass doors potentially reducing the visual appeal of the flames.

While wood stove fans are effective for improving heat distribution, they rely on the stove reaching a certain temperature to operate efficiently. If the stove does not generate enough heat, the fan may not start or may not move air effectively. Additionally, like any fan, wood stove fans cannot cool a stove or reduce its heat output—they only redistribute existing warmth.

It’s possible to clean your chimney by accessing it from the opening above your fireplace, but be aware that this method is messier because you will be pulling loose buildup of soot, ash, and creosote into your fireplace instead of up, out, and onto the roof. While the bottom-up method can cause more of a mess, it’s a good option if you’re not comfortable getting on the roof.

If you don’t clean your chimney regularly, it can result in a build-up of creosote that can ignite and cause a chimney fire. In addition, creosote build-up can result in poor venting of smoke, soothes, and carbon monoxide, making the air quality indoors dangerously poor. Creosote is also acidic and can damage mortar and metal over time, allowing smoke to leak into your home.
