Customers say: True professional

"I couldn't be happier with the work. Andy was extremely helpful and punctual. I had quite a few estimates on my kitchen remodel and I felt like none of the contractors I talked to were really interested in what I wanted. Andy listened to everything I had to say and delivered.

Not only was the work completed on time. It was top notch work and under budget. How often does that happen?

I would highly recommend Andy Scott and would definitely use him again in the future.

"He just worked very tirelessly to get permits from city for slope of driveway. It was a lengthy and difficult process and he was the only one to take on this project. The work done was completely really well."

"My husband and I had spent 13 years remodeling our 1873 house by ourselves. When it came time to do our dream project of adding a sunroom, finding a contractor to do the work instead of doing it ourselves was a very important decision to us. We met with several contractors and knew instantly that John and his son Nate at Addition Doctors were the people we wanted taking on this project. John and Nate were so great to work with. They were the only company we met with who gave us a computer generated model of what the project would look like so we had a very clear vision of the end product. They were the only company to quote us the project under the budget we told them we had to work with. They kept us up to date at every step of the project and there were never any surprises about cost or timing. They had great ideas for the project when we weren't exactly sure what should or could be done. We love our finished sunroom. The quality of work and service they gave was excellent. We would highly recommend Addition Doctors for anyone who is looking to have quality work done to their home."

"According to the website, the person we met with is a "Foundation Expert."  Per his advice, we needed about $8000 in beams because the cement blocks showed bowing/cracking.  This house is only 650 sq feet and built in the 1950s.  He basically implied that the walls had extensive damage and the house would never sell unless we put beams up.  He deemed the repairs done by a previous homeowner as very bad and said they needed to be fixed immediately.  The waterproofing system was an additional $3500.
The whole thing seemed more like a sales pitch using the fear factor of a bad foundation.  And, I was put off by the "buy now" price difference.  They would give me a "realtor discount" if I agreed to do the work and pay the deposit right away.  Like I'd ever spend $12K without getting other bids and researching the heck out of it.
We decided to hire a structural engineer that wasn't trying to sell us something to inspect the basement and foundation.  Paying the engineer a couple hundred bucks was worth every penny.  After a full inspection, his professional opinion was that there were no structural issues.  The engineer report states that while the repairs made by the previous homeowner made were "unsightly" they are effective.  Meaning - the method they used was ugly, but the support it provided was effective and adding additional beams was unnecessary.
I would highly, highly recommend getting a structural engineer before hiring any company to basement repairs.  It saved us about $8000.

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Although it’s not required, air ventilation in a finished basement can help improve the air quality, prevent moisture and mold issues, keep musty odors away, and also maintain the air quality throughout the rest of your home. Proper ventilation will help maintain the value of your investment in finishing your basement. Try basement ventilation methods like installing vents or a dehumidifier for best results.

Yes, you can add a bathroom to an unfinished basement, but you’ll want to take proper precautions if doing so. As with any bathroom addition, you’ll need to make sure that it’s approved by local building authorities first. With unfinished basements, you especially need to keep an eye on proper ventilation practices.

Envision the type of bar experience you'd like to create for your guests. For example:

  • Does your basement have enough finished space for bar stools or seating?

  • What type of additional lighting would set the tone for the room?

  • Are there basement windows or an HVAC system?

  • Do you need new plumbing in your basement for a proper wet bar?

  • Could you be happy with a built-in wall cabinet bar rather than a full-scale wet bar?

The best type of basement ventilation system depends on your budget, the moisture in your basement’s air, and the types of windows you have down there. You should consider all of these factors when choosing a ventilation system. However, the most effective method for basement ventilation is an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) or a whole-house ventilation system, which preheats or precools incoming air from the outside while also managing water vapor.

It is generally more affordable to finish a basement than an attic, though it ultimately depends on how you plan to use the space. The average cost to finish a basement ranges from $7 to $23 per square foot, while attic renovation costs $30 to $60 per square foot. However, a simple attic conversion to a storage space will cost significantly less.
