"These guys suck. I had a complete kitchen remodel. I hired Stephen to do the rough plumbing before the cabinets and countertops were placed. He did that job adequately, although the price was exorbitant. I then needed him to come back for the finish installation of the sink, grinder, dishwasher, and cooktop. He had no clue who I was or where the job was, and this was three weeks after he did the rough work. After I reminded him where the job was, Stephen and his partner showed up half hour after he said he would. The did less than half the work, and then vaporized. He failed to call back. Now I've got to find another plumber to finish the job, and probably will get a hefty bill for the hour work that he did today. Totally unacceptable. This guy has no idea about customer service."

Small Appliance Repair questions, answered by experts

If you use your microwave as your quick reheating solution, replacing it with a steam oven won’t be your best choice. Steam ovens take a long time to heat things up. Sometimes, it can be an hour or more before your food is ready. Meanwhile, a microwave heats up food in minutes with many quick-heat presets, making it the perfect option for those on a tight schedule.

A microwave can last anywhere from five to 10 years. To get the most out of this appliance, you should follow a few maintenance tips:

  • Immediately clean up spills and food bits. To help with stuck-on food, heat a bowl of water with ¼ cup of lemon juice for one minute.

  • For over-the-range microwaves, clean the grease filter that’s underneath it. This will ensure the microwave runs efficiently.

  • Never put anything metal in the microwave, as it can create a fire hazard. Also, avoid dishes with metal trim for the same reason.

  • Avoid slamming the door. With years of use, the door switches could easily break.

In most cases, it’s better to repair a microwave than replace it, provided the appliance isn’t reaching the end of its life. The average cost to repair a microwave is $175, while a total replacement will average around $500, including the microwave and the labor cost to install it. If your microwave is less than five years old, it will probably be more cost-effective to repair it. If it’s reaching the end of its life—usually around seven to eight years old—then replacing it might be more affordable in the long run.

Regular cleaning, checking ventilation paths, and ensuring correct voltage or power settings maintain efficiency and reduce repair risks.

The cost to repair an appliance varies depending on the make, model, parts needing repair, and labor time to repair each kind of appliance. Labor costs may range from $40 to $120 per hour during business hours, but will likely increase on holidays and for emergencies outside of normal business hours. On average, common appliance repair costs include:

  • Dishwasher: $160–$300

  • Dryer: $100–$400

  • Freezer: $90–$500

  • Garbage disposal: $70–$250

  • Microwave: $50–$400

  • Oven, cooktop, range: $100–$500

  • Refrigerator: $200–$300

  • Washing machine: $50–$450
