"The guy came to inspect my house very quickly. He gave me a very reasonable quote for taking care of all problems in my crawl space. He addressed all issues which I pointed out, but also went the extra mile to make sure we didn't have future problems. Tasks done include repairing disconnected ducts, ducts without insulation, ducts with insulation falling off, installing insulation underneath the entire floor in the crawl space, and laying down a vapor barrier. When I called him up and let him know that I wanted to proceed with the service, he very quickly came out and had the job done before I even got home. Quick and great service. I wish all service was like this."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Yes. Proper, complete insulation will ensure that you trap the most cool or warm air inside your home, preventing high energy bills. In addition, insulation tends to settle and compress, leaving gaps over time; the more you insulate completely during the initial installation, the less you’ll need to do down the line.

The thickness of floor insulation will depend on the R-value you plan to achieve. R-value varies on the type of material as well as its thickness and density. Insulation materials with low R-values can be layered to match the value of denser materials. As long as your floor insulation is packed tightly, seals the area from drafts, and doesn’t prevent ventilation, it can be as thick (or thin) as you need.

STC (Sound Transmission Class) is a rating that describes how well a building material or assembly blocks airborne sound. A higher STC rating means less noise will pass through the material, providing better sound reduction. This rating system applies to various building components, including windows, doors, flooring, drywall, and insulation.

For context, a typical single-pane window has an STC rating of around 25 (where normal conversations are audible), while a well-sealed, double-pane window can exceed STC 45 (blocking loud speech and most music). It is important to note that for some products, like soundproofing drywall, the STC rating refers to the entire wall system, not just the individual panel.

Additionally, STC ratings are most effective for measuring sound reduction at mid-to-high frequencies, such as human speech, and may not accurately reflect how well a material blocks low-frequency sounds like bass music or thunder. Because of these factors, it is recommended to consult a professional to determine the right STC-rated materials for your specific soundproofing needs.

You can buy pipe insulation materials in your local hardware store or in major home improvement stores. You can also shop for insulation online, where you may be able to more easily buy in bulk. When shopping, make sure you know your pipe's dimensions so you can buy the correct size of pipe insulation materials for your pipes.

Depending on where you live and the conditions of your basement, you may not need to insulate your basement. Your best bet is to talk to a basement remodeling company to find out what they recommend doing.

Insulating your basement can help improve your home's energy efficiency, but it will also increase the cost of your basement remodel project. The average cost of installing basement insulation is $2,400.
