"Shinetime was hired to clean gutters and pressure wash the buildings and other structures in my condominium complex. Jeff Johnson and his crew did an outstanding job and they were very thorough. Before pressure washing he took the time to pre-treat problem areas. The community front entrance as well as a large brick retaining wall were black with mold and algae, but after being pre-treated and pressure washed they look brand new. The buildings look marvelous as well. After they finished cleaning the gutters on my townhome they did a great job of cleaning up; my backyard patio was spotless. Jeff aims to please and he is very conscientious. For example, at the request of a homeowner in my condo complex, Jeff took special care to pressure wash around a bird’s nest that was high up on the homeowner’s chimney to make sure the eggs were not disturbed and the nest was left intact. Shinetime does a high-quality job and takes special care to meet his customers’ needs. I highly recommend Shinetime and Jeff Johnson. I hope they can come back to our condo neighborhood next year."

Cleaning questions, answered by experts

It usually takes around one hour for one person to deep clean a 100 to 200 square foot space, or between eight and 12 hours for a full home. Large construction projects may take longer, especially if your contractor didn’t do routine cleanups throughout the construction process. Your cleaning professional should be able to give you an estimate on how long they believe the job will take.

You should consider doing a few things on your own that fall under the category of “good house cleaner etiquette” to prepare for your house cleaner. These include tidying counters, floors, and other surfaces, taking care of the dishes, moving laundry to the laundry room or a dedicated laundry basket, and putting away personal and private items. Think of your house cleaner as someone who brings your home from relatively tidy to organized and clean, and you should have no issues.

Homeowners can perform basic cleanup, but for efficient and thorough results, larger-scale or thorough cleaning may be best left to professionals.

As a general rule, you should clean your oven at least every three months, though this depends on how often you use it and the amount of residue buildup. A clear sign that your oven needs cleaning is if you notice smoke or a burning smell during use. Many ovens have a self-cleaning cycle, which heats the oven to an extreme temperature. If you use this feature, stay home while it runs and consider ventilating the room, as it can create smoke. For manual cleaning, you can make a paste of baking soda and water or use white vinegar before resorting to harsher, store-bought oven cleaners.

Whether a scullery is worth it depends on how much you like to cook and entertain. If you frequently host gatherings—a scullery is likely worth the money. If you’re looking for ROI, it’s not so clear. It may not add significant value to your home, as it doesn’t increase square footage and may repurpose space that a buyer would have preferred to remain as-is (like a laundry room).
