"We had a wonderful experience with Artisan Custom Closets from start to finish. Kimberly was knowledgeable and extremely helpful in getting us everything we wanted in our closet. The installers were great guys and did a fabulous job. I only have good things to say and I would recommend doing business with this company."

"I wish HomeAdvisor were not so restricted in its selectable projects. Fred and his team were did a great job getting our house ready for sale. They repaired missing pieces of granite countertops, installed lighting upgrades, installed new carpet, fixed dry wall, and did interior painting. We were very happy with the results and we had a contract for our asking price within hours of listing. Fred and his team were courteous and professional, and had great advice when we were not sure of the best way to do something. All for a reasonable price, too. Highly recommended."

"On top of being excellent at their work (I hired them for house painting and repairing and installing new fences), Erick and his crew are clean, courteous and professional. I am picky and I inspected their work as they went along and they addressed each concern I had. They didnâ t try to upsell me on services or supplies and whenever a spot was missed, they immediately corrected it. In fact, another contractor splashed over their paint job and he cleaned it for no extra charge. I highly recommend Erick and will use his company again. With a 100 yo house, I will undoubtably need his services again."

Small jobs welcome

Customers say: Quality work

"We hired Ruben to install a pair of French doors that we bought secondhand. Ruben did a fantastic job! The work involved shifting ductwork and electrical outlets, drywall and trim work, paint and floor patch. Itâ s was more work than initially anticipated but Ruben handled it professionally. Very reasonably priced; he reviewed all material receipts with me at the end of the job. I work for a well known general commercial contractor and would hire Ruben again."

Closets questions, answered by experts

The vertical space between closet shelves depends on what you're storing. For clothing like shirts and sweaters, 10 to 12 inches is enough. Towels and linens need 12 to 15 inches, while tall storage bins may require 18 inches or more. Overcrowding your shelves can reduce accessibility and increase clutter, so be sure to leave breathing room for your items.

The time it takes to build a closet varies widely depending on the project's size, complexity, and level of customization. On average, construction can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks.

A simple reach-in closet might be completed in less than a day, while a more complex walk-in closet could take one to two days or more. A typical project often falls in the 2-to-5-day range. However, a large, highly customized walk-in closet that requires structural changes, like moving a load-bearing wall, will take significantly longer.

A professional contractor can provide the most accurate time estimate for your specific project. If you are planning a DIY build, it is best to budget additional time.

Yes, 12-inch shelves are often considered the standard closet shelf depth for storing folded clothing, shoes, and small containers. However, if you plan to store bulky items such as blankets, baskets, or cleaning supplies, you may want to go deeper. For specialized layouts, an adjustable system can give you more flexibility.

If you’re on a tight budget, the least expensive material you can buy for DIY closet shelves is chipboard, a.k.a. particle board. This inexpensive material is made from a pulp of sawdust, resin, and glue that’s pressed together under high temperature and pressure. As you can imagine, it’s not very sturdy and might buckle under your blue jean collection, so you should only use it if you’re storing very light items.

Yes, books are typically heavier than clothes, unless you have a collection exclusively of paperbacks or comic books. That’s why packing lots of books warrants careful planning and consideration. Consider packing up your reading collection first to determine whether you need to downsize it before loading it into your moving truck.
