"We had a wonderful experience with Artisan Custom Closets from start to finish. Kimberly was knowledgeable and extremely helpful in getting us everything we wanted in our closet. The installers were great guys and did a fabulous job. I only have good things to say and I would recommend doing business with this company."

"This company did an outstanding job renovating the cabinets in our Duluth kitchen. They were responsive from the first phone call and kept us informed during every stage of the project. The quote was detailed and fairly priced, with no unexpected surprises at the end. The installation team paid close attention to measurements, alignment, hardware, and finishing details. They also cleaned the work area carefully after completing the job. Our new kitchen is beautiful, functional, and exactly what we hoped for."

Customers say: Quick response

"They were efficient and reliable. They couldn't get to the site because of their car broke down and called me. Except for that one time, they were on site until it was finished. They had to remove the bathroom floor due to previous shower leaking. A new sub floor was installed, new shower built and all was tiled. They had to be creative for the plumbing on the new vanity, as there was not much room. I had them install a closet in a sitting area of the master bedroom and install hardwood floors in the master and 2 other bedrooms. After about a month, I can find no faults with their work."

"I had a couple of landscape folks take a look at the work I wanted and his pricing was in line and the finished product looked perfect. He is good with communication and everything he said he would do, he did it. Gary is a good guy, very personable, honest and he has gained my trust and I will be using him again."

Closets questions, answered by experts

There are a few reasons custom closets are expensive: materials used, the luxury factor, and time to build. The people who can afford custom closets are those who can afford increased rates, and construction workers and contractors know this and charge accordingly. The time to build custom closets is substantial, especially if expensive material is being used or intricate details (like carved wood) are added to the project.

You can budget a little less money for how to build a closet with wire shelves than with wood shelves. Some people don’t like the aesthetics that wire shelves provide, though, meaning they’ll gladly spend a little more to add wood shelves to the build. If you decide to buy pre-made wire shelves instead of building custom-sized wood shelves, you’ll be restricted in the closet shelving dimensions you can use.

Plywood, MDF (medium-density fiberboard), and solid wood are all popular options for closet shelving. Plywood and solid wood are sturdy and ideal for extended shelves or heavy items. MDF is a budget-friendly choice for light to moderate storage, but it can sag under heavy weight if not adequately supported. Wire shelving is another alternative that allows airflow, making it especially useful in humid spaces such as laundry rooms or basements.

Some features and upgrades you can add (some of which increase the closet’s value) are: modular shelving, motion-activated lighting, climate control, custom lighting, cigar humidors, revolving shoe racks, jewelry shelves, custom woodwork, and built-in laundry hampers. While only truly luxury closets have all of these, many custom closets have at least one special feature listed above.

On average, building a custom or built-in closet costs around $2,100. However, the total price can range from as little as $500 for a simple DIY project to $6,000 or more for a large, high-end custom closet. Most projects typically fall between $1,500 and $5,000.

The final cost depends on several factors, including the closet's size, type, materials, and features. Here is a general cost breakdown by closet type:

  • Reach-in closet: $500 to $1,500

  • Walk-in closet: $750 to $5,000

  • Wardrobe: $2,000 to $6,000 or more

Choosing a prefabricated closet system is generally less expensive than a fully custom build. The scope of design and construction services will also significantly impact the price.
