"Alex and the team at Quintessential Renovations are great! When we were trying to get our bathroom remodeled we received multiple quotes. We chose Alex and his team because not only was Alex knowledgable but he was willing to work with us to get our design down for such a small space while others were quick to say no. They were also efficient, valued our time and were considerate about cleanliness. Now we only trust Quintessential Renovations for all our projects and will continue to recommend them to other families."

"Cisco and his team were extremely professional and performed interior design/remodeling work for my brand new home a few weeks back. They build a custom made stacked stone wall for my main living room, wainscoting throughout the entire house and some great trim work as well. Cisco's team was professional, had great craftsmanship and were very punctual with all work requests. I would hire Cisco and his team again in a heartbeat and recommend all interested parties to contact A2Z for your custom interior work needs."

"We were totally satisfied with our kitchen remodel. Manuel and the US Regional Group crew worked with me to make sure I could save the parts of the kitchen we wanted to keep, and replace what we wanted to. Manuel did job site visits to follow up with the crew on several occasions in order to keep us updated on what was worth keeping or trash, that allowed us to stay within budget and receive a result we were happy with. The craftsmanship was excellent. Manuel has also come out to follow up as needed since the kitchen has been completed."

"Briggs and his nephew did extremely great job installing a kitchenette in my lower level basement area/adding recessed lighting and a few other projects we requested. From plumbing to electrical and sheet rocking plus painting everything came out very beautiful. Briggs made my family very comfortable throughout the entire process and we are very pleased with the outcome and will definitely used Briggs for any future projects."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Walkout basements are not generally included in a home’s square footage, although they may be if they meet certain conditions that depend on local regulations. A finished walkout basement used as a living space may be counted toward square footage in some locations as long as all codes for livable space are met.

You technically can paint wires in a basement ceiling, but there are several important safety and code considerations. It's safe to paint non-metallic sheathed cable as long as the labeling remains visible. You can also paint low-voltage wires and conduit and junction boxes to help them blend into your basement.

However, you should not paint damaged or deteriorated wiring is a fire hazard because it poses a fire hazard. The same goes for painting over high-heat wires that connect to heat-generating appliances or systems. Be sure to avoid painting multiple coats onto any wires, as that traps heat and poses fire risks.

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.

You should always use high-quality lumber for your framing in order to ensure it will last the test of time and resist moisture. Use 2-foot by 4-foot lumber that is pressure-treated for your framing.

Roughing in and connecting utilities are the hardest parts of finishing a basement, and they’re the parts we typically don’t recommend doing as a DIY project. Unfortunately, your finishing timeline can be extended by weeks while you wait for contractors and inspectors to install electrical wiring, plumbing lines, and heating/cooling equipment and carry out inspections.
