"I contacted Rapid Locksmith Pros to rekey the doors to a store we just rented out because the old tenants didn?t leave out the old keys. We were under the impression we would have to switch out the locks but was happy they were able to make us new keys keeping the same locks on the doors. Great service 5/5"

"I just bought a new house and needed all of the locks to be replaced before moving in. Found The Flying Locksmith through Angie list and called them. Diego answered the phone and gave me the quote, it was very reasonable. The tech came in the same day and got everything done nicely. He also gave me some recommendation on how to better secure my home. Flying Locksmith is very nice, professional and affordable. Will definitely hire them again for future needs."

"When you look up fast and reliable small businessman in the dictionary, this guy's picture should show up!  Bryan had installed these locks for two of our neighbors, so I called him on Wednesday.  He said he could come out Friday between 12:30 and 1:30 to install our locks, and quoted $360, which I thought was a great price since the locks are over $30 apiece.  I thought that was also a great response time.  He called about an hour before he was scheduled to arrive, and asked apologetically if it was OK if he showed up around 3:00, and that was fine with us.  He showed up right at 3:00, worked extremely efficiently and professionally, and completed the job to our complete satisfaction.  I then mentioned that another locksmith had installed a second lock on our front door, and it wasn't working in concert with the first lock.  He looked at it and fixed it in a matter of minutes, and did not charge us for the extra job.  He has installed over 200 of these locks in this area, so obviously he's good at what he does.  And he's personable, conversational and very helpful.  We highly recommend him!!!

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Door locks should be changed roughly every seven years. The average lifespan of a door lock is seven to 10 years, so it’s best to err on the side of caution and change them early, especially if they are showing signs of wear and tear. Examples of deterioration include visible rust and difficulty opening or closing the door. Some locks can work safely beyond 10 years, but it depends on how often they are used and whether they are exposed to damaging environmental conditions like precipitation or extreme temperatures.

Most door knobs can be removed with a Phillips or flathead screwdriver. If you don’t have either of those available, a paper clip or small pin can sometimes work, but the extra effort may not be worth a quick trip to the hardware store.

Rekeying your own locks is a low-cost task that prevents you from having to replace the locks themselves completely. The first couple of times you rekey a lock may be challenging because this is an intermediate DIY task. You can purchase a rekey kit from most hardware stores, but make sure you’re buying the kit from the brand of lock in your home that you’re going to rekey.

It can affect security, especially if you don’t finish it properly. A Dutch door has more moving parts that can be compromised, so you’ll want to use solid hardware and make sure everything lines up and locks cleanly. If the latch is flimsy or the two halves don’t sit tight, it’s going to be easier to force open.

It is best to use a dry lubricant, such as a Teflon-based option, for door locks. Unlike popular oil-based lubricants, dry lubricants leave a non-stick, water-repellent coating that does not attract dust, dirt, and other debris. Using an oil-based lubricant can cause these particles to build up inside the lock, making it difficult to operate or even damaging the internal mechanism. You can find dry lubricants, some of which are made specifically for locks, at most hardware stores.
