Small jobs welcome

"Ken was the nicest guy. It took him no time at all to get our keys working on our new houseâ s locks. Then he tackled the lock on my deceased fatherâ s Craftsman tool big box (whatever they are called). He caught that our back door lock was installed upside down and fixed it. He then offered to fix our rather sticky front door. I would highly recommend his servicess."

"Greg with Kelly?s Keys was amazing. So friendly, and I could tell he knew his stuff. He left his info so I could call him if I had any questions later. I would recommend him to anyone that needs his kind of assistance. Thank you Angie for bringing him to us. I will definitely call again if I need him."

"Absolutely, here's a review for a locksmith service that helped with a car lockout and key replacement: "I recently found myself locked out of my car, and I contacted this locksmith service . Their response time was impressive, and the locksmith who arrived was professional and courteous. They efficiently unlocked my car and made a new key on the spot. The pricing was fair considering the emergency service provided. Overall, I was highly satisfied with their service and would recommend them to anyone in need of a reliable locksmith for car emergencies.""

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

If you don’t have your original key, the easiest way to obtain a copy is to call a locksmith. For house keys, your locksmith has several options for configuring a new key:

  • They can input a lock’s identification code into a database to obtain key-cutting instructions.

  • They could analyze the lock cylinder to determine how to cut a new key.

  • They can create an impression of the lock cylinder from which to cut a new key.

In some cases this is possible, but it’s not advisable as the screwdriver is likely to leave marks all over the wall and a noticeable dent on the door. Move slowly and carefully if you have to use this method, and consider calling an emergency locksmith right away instead of trying to break in.

Aside from the labor costs, several other factors can impact the cost of hiring a locksmith. If you can avoid services during off-hours, you can save on fees often charged for urgent requests. Consider additional factors such as:

  • Type of services required

  • Emergency call fees

  • Home and lock location

  • Number of locks to repair or install

  • Peak hours

  • Type of locks

Door locks should be changed roughly every seven years. The average lifespan of a door lock is seven to 10 years, so it’s best to err on the side of caution and change them early, especially if they are showing signs of wear and tear. Examples of deterioration include visible rust and difficulty opening or closing the door. Some locks can work safely beyond 10 years, but it depends on how often they are used and whether they are exposed to damaging environmental conditions like precipitation or extreme temperatures.

Using a combination of tools (often store-bought plumbing tools) and brute force, a burglar can easily snap the lock on a door. Snapping a lock aims to gain access to the cylinder inside, which holds the locking mechanism. Once the thief snaps the lock, they can pick the cylinder open and walk right in.
