"Simple water services came out immediately and took care of the water test needed for our mortgage with no advance notice. Then we hired them to install a new water system once our purchase was finished. The guys came out the next day and completed the installation in less than one day. Anytime I have called them they are always available to help right away and have always had the best prices around. I would highly recommend them to anyone for any water related need!"

"Just had them install a full house water system and I’m so happy with it. It makes my water softer than ever and wouldn’t change anything. Also my drink water doesn’t smell and taste very good. I’ll definitely recommend them and am so grateful for the results."

"Loved the inhome demonstration showing particles in water (even water that was filtered on the refrigerator) along with chlorine buildup. I then got to do a taste comparison and even compare washing my hands (you too will notice a difference.). 80 monthly payment just about pays for itself not having to buy bottles. Install was also fast, professional and right on time!"

"They did pump out and cleaned the septic tank. I talked to Andrew yesterday evening and he called me in the morning and scheduled the pumping for morning 9am. The truck came on time. Very professional in service and pricing."

"Pioneer Plumbing did all the plumbing work on a total renovation of home we purchased. This included not only upgrading, moving, and installing a new water heater, but running new water lines, installing all new bathroom fixtures, kitchen fixtures, and rerouting water lines for the new washer/dryer location. John Fratt was extremely accommodating to our requests and very thorough in all the work he did. He did a quality job. It is without hesitation that we would recommend Pioneer Plumbing for any plumbing work or needs."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

Most of the U.S. has hard water, especially across portions of the West and Midwest. The areas with the hardest water include parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Illinois, North and South Dakota, Ohio, and New York. You’ll find soft water in parts of New England, the Southeast, the Pacific Northwest, and Hawaii.

Generally, it is safe to bathe in yellow water, as the color is often caused by iron, tannins, or rust, which won't harm your skin. Soap will still clean you effectively, though the water might leave stains. However, if the water has an unusual smell or you suspect contamination, avoid bathing and contact a plumber for an inspection. A professional can also help if you find bathing in yellow water problematic and want to determine how to get your water clear again.

A lower-end water softener would cost around $900, not including installation. Each home has different requirements, water hardness, and number of inhabitants, so there’s a huge range in pricing—$600 to over $6,000. The average water softener repair bill is around $500, meaning it’s a much better option to repair any issues and only replace your softener if absolutely necessary.

A good hardness level for drinking water can vary based on personal preferences, but an ideal level is 3.5 to 7 GPG. This means your water isn’t soft or hard. However, some people prefer the “fresh” taste from the minerals in hard water, while others like the smoother, “slippery” texture of soft water.

The primary difference between a water softener and a water filter lies in what they remove from the water. A water softener is designed to remove hard minerals like calcium and magnesium. In contrast, a water filter has a broader effect, removing various contaminants above a certain size, which can include bacteria and other impurities.

To decide which you need, consider your goal. If you want to eliminate hard minerals, choose a softener. If you want to remove a wide range of contaminants, a filter is the better option. Filters are also generally less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply, you may need to install both for comprehensive treatment.
