"One of a Kind Carpenter was terrific. All the work was completed- even though we ran into some challenges, which they quickly resolved. I have an older house, and these were not anticipated with the job. I also added on to the project a few times, which they managed to do in a timely fashion, and the quality of work was impeccable. I would highly recommend him, and I will not use anyone else for my work now."

"After searching many different companies, I was very please with the review that I read on Angie's list. June was always very responsive to my many questions, and explained the options of what we could do with the piece. We didn't want to hide the beautiful wood work by painting it, so we decided to have it stripped and stained. Victor and Jerry were so kind, professional and careful with the piece. They even took a leaf that we had wanted the China cabinet to match, and they did it flawlessly! I would highly recommend this company, and we will definitely be using them again very soon. Thank you!! :-)"

Small jobs welcome

"It was a pleasure to work with Javier. He always wanted to make sure that I'm completely satisfied with job I hired him for. I'm very happy with my new kitchen, Javier did everything - demolition, cabinets and all appliances installation. He even leveled marble floor under the kitchen appliances to make sure they are leveled appropriately. He completed his job on time as promised. Excellent service."

"Southern Rust Woodworks has the best custom built products around. I have several pieces he has made for me, and I get asked all the time who did them and how to contact him. He can make anything you want! Or if you donâ t have an idea, he has great ideas himself. My house is basically a Southern Rust Woodworks showcase. Love all my pieces and they are excellent quality. Love all his products!!!"

"The trunk was in very bad condition. Eugenio restored the outside and the inside, including building a drawer/shelf that was missing. It took a month longer than originally promised, but the results were worth it. Eugenio was actually recommended to me by another furniture restoration company that was highly rated, but did not restore trunks. While it cost more than I'd like, I was happy with the results.

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

If you remove a load-bearing wall to create an entrance to a carport or covered patio, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. Factors such as the type of addition and if that area needs additional work will add to the price.

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

The primary parts of a house that need framing during construction are floors, exterior walls, interior walls, and the roof. The framing in these areas provides the skeleton for adding other materials over the top. With walls, for example, contractors can hang drywall over the interior walls and siding over the outside of the exterior walls. Proper framing ensures a sturdy house that is built to last.

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.
