"Excellent! I showed them a picture of what look I was going for. The owner takes the time to listen to your input and then makes suggestions based on his experience. It is definitely a collaboration between the carpenter and the homeowner. They show up on time and take pride in their work and it shows in the end result. This was actually the 2nd job they did on my house. The first visit was crown moulding and and framing out the front entry door w/ decorative moulding. I will definitely use them for future carpentry needs."

"I contacted June to repair a wood chair.  The chair seat had broken on one side and my husband had tried to install a long screw to fix it.  The screw was stuck in the wood frame sticking out about 3 inches.  I brought them the chair on Wednesday and they called Friday to say it was done.  It looks new and the seat and chair frame are now sturdy.  After installing the screws they had put a plug over the screw to hide it- it matched the other screw heads perfectly.  June even went above and beyond by using a wood marker on a couple of scratches on the chair.  (One word of caution for those using their service - they are fantastic but their door is immediately next to another furniture store and if you drop there accidentally another provider will fix your chair.  Jim will claim you said "JIm" and not that you were looking for "June".  Make sure you ask if you are in Family Furniture when you drop off.)

"Very well! This was a trial 2 hour job to see how AFE performs. I used an Angie's list coupon. Angel from AFE contacted me quickly. We met a few days later based on our schedules. He showed up exactly on time. I had him replace a kitchen faucet and then he helped me to remove an old window and fan assembly from the 2nd story of the house. I enjoyed working with him, and was impressed with his level of experience and ability to discuss/do everything from plumbing, to carpentry, to electrical work. I am planning to give him more jobs."

Small jobs welcome

"I used Jeremey to level some uneven concrete prior to flooring installation. There were some small challenges to the project as well like raising a threshold. He did great work in the promised time frame. I highly recommend him."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

When choosing a drywall anchor, consider the weight of the object you're hanging and how much weight the anchor will need to support. The heavier the weight, the stronger the anchor you'll need. You’ll find the weight capacity on the packaging when shopping for anchors.

Also, remember that you can use more than one anchor when hanging something on the wall. If you're using multiple anchors, divide the object weight by the number of anchors to determine how much each will need to support. If you need help deciding which drywall anchor to use, you can hire a handyperson to hang your objects.

Homeowners can increase the usefulness of their garage space in other ways, and one option is to extend the length of the garage by making it deeper. The process is similar to traditional garage extensions, but the end product is a garage with a different layout rather than additional parking spaces.

It’s sometimes safe to replace a load-bearing wall with a beam, but you need a structural engineer to sign off on the project. You’ll also likely have to upgrade to a steel I-beam or another material that’s stronger than wood to maintain the level of support you need without the wall underneath.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

If you remove a load-bearing wall to create an entrance to a carport or covered patio, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. Factors such as the type of addition and if that area needs additional work will add to the price.
