"I loved working with Josh, Ben, Jake & the team. Slight miscalculation in the tile ordered so had to wait 2 weeks for the last 2 pieces of shower floor tile. So installation took longer than planned. We had different installers for the jobs as they were months apart."

"In 1952 they set tile in 1.5" of mortar in these Queen Block homes. Mortar and lath. it took sledgehammers, special blades and wire cutters to get the bathroom gutted. The re-framed the shower, removed old shower drain, installed tile BEATIFULLY, no errors, with corner glass shelves, replaced the plumbing, did the floor outside the shower for the entire bathroom, create 6" baseboard to match. Gorgeous work, beautifully finished, job cleaned up daily, and final clean was excellent. I'm calling them back for the other bathroom, the kitchen and the entire house is now going tile, I trust who is doing the work. AWESOME. Add: HAPPY humans, manners, pleasant to be around. I've already provided their name to four friends looking for good contractors. Tile work can be 'slapped up' by anyone. These guys know how to do it artfully."

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

Yes, it’s always a good idea to keep a box or two of spare tiles after a home renovation project. Tiles can crack from improper installation, heavy foot traffic, and impact from drops. Having some extra tile on hand can make replacement fast, easy, and affordable. Plus, some manufacturers might discontinue particular colors or styles, and slight variations in tile colors between batches could mean mismatched tiles even if your product isn’t discontinued. Having a few spare tiles in storage can help avoid these issues, as well.

Bathrooms are naturally moisture-rich environments, so choose a durable, water-resistant tile for your tub surround. Porcelain and ceramic are two popular options that are also quite affordable. Glass is another good option that’s also low-maintenance—you just need a glass cleaner like you would use on the bathroom mirror. Natural stone tile is porous, but it’s still a viable option if you choose it in a glazed version.

It’s not necessarily normal for tiles to lift, although it’s one of the common issues people may have with their tile flooring. Tiles correctly installed by pros with expansion joints should not lift over time. However, if the installation was done poorly, you might see tiles tenting or lifting as the house settles. This is more common in high-moisture areas with extreme temperatures.

When choosing between porcelain and ceramic tile, the best option depends on your specific needs, budget, and project application. Porcelain tile is generally more durable, denser, and harder than ceramic, making it a good choice for busy, high-traffic areas. It also offers superior moisture resistance, making it ideal for moisture-retaining spaces. However, porcelain is typically more expensive, and its hardness can make it brittle, potentially causing it to crack if a heavy object is dropped on it. In contrast, ceramic tile is a more budget-friendly option with lower material and installation costs. It is softer and easier to work with, making it a great choice for DIY projects. While not as durable as porcelain, ceramic is still a quality material suitable for many home applications, particularly small, decorative projects.

The rule tells you how to cut tile to install it in a corner. The 3/4/5 rule recommends that you should have 3 feet across on one straight line, four feet on the other perpendicular line, and 5 feet of length from the end of one of the lines to the other. You’re making a right triangle with the tile, and the hypotenuse (the line across from where the 3-foot lie and 4-foot line meet) should be 5 feet long.
