"Absolutely wonderful! Steve and Stacy are so detailed and literally left no mistakes and fixed painting mistakes made by previous contractors. Reached very high and hard to reach places and it looks perfect and brand new! Already scheduling to use again and will only use them in future. HIGHLY recommend."

"Mr. De Marco and his team began right on time and completed the project on time, despite learning that the deck support pieces were rotten upon pulling up the old decking. They had to fit in replacing the support structure completely and worked tirelessly and long hours to get it done - not just to finish on time for us but to also be able to keep their word to the next client to begin their project. The finished screened porch is more lovely, cool and shady (and bug free!) than we dreamed possible. Mr. De Marco came back as needed to tweak a few small items because he wants it to be just right and takes immeasurable (and well justified) pride in his work. He was flexible and patient as we asked questions or made adjustments."

"Lewis was professional, courteous, friendly, and helpful. He answered any questions I had, suggested things that would prevent other problems, and helped me with other improvements I was working on. My phone calls were either answered or returned within the hour. Anything I pointed out was taken care of. Prep work began 3 days after our initial meeting and painting soon followed. All work was done by Lewis with some prep work and painting done by Buddy. I had other contractors working in my home, and Lewis and Buddy worked around them. I am very happy with the results and would definitely hire HCP again.

"Unfortunately the contractor missed my scheduled appointment.  When called they apologized and showed up shortly thereafter. When the contractor arrived, they explained the scope of what I purchased.  They immediately started to work and was finished in short order.  Work was satisfactory and professionally done.  One repair made did have a small leak at first rain.  When called they responded quickly."

"Allen and his crew arrived actually a few minutes early to begin work.  Our condominium storage room was a disaster after the massive floods of April 29, 2014.  They removed all tools, boxes of lighting and landscaping supplies, extra fence rails and lumber, and metal shingles from the room and began work.  They installed metal shelving  on 2 walls, installed tool and ladder hanging equipment throughout, and they also built a wooden frame hanging from the ceiling and back wall to hold odd pieces of lumber, replacement 8-foot fence rails and the like.  They re-placed all our items in the new storage room in a very organized and user-friendly fashion. They constructed a 1-1/4" high support system to hold metal shingles, getting them off the concrete floor and out of the way.  They hung metal shelving in our electrical room for more storage.  They made excellent use of much previously wasted space.
These gentlemen worked steady and very hard in 100+ degree heat, did an exceptional job for us in just over 5 hours.  Did I mention that the cost actually came in more than $50 under budget?!!  (Allen's quote was very fair to begin with!)  We are very pleased with Allen and his team, and will definitely call on them for future projects. We definitely recommend Allen's Home and Rental Repairs.

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.

Homeowners can increase the usefulness of their garage space in other ways, and one option is to extend the length of the garage by making it deeper. The process is similar to traditional garage extensions, but the end product is a garage with a different layout rather than additional parking spaces.

It’s best to use two screws to secure deck boards into every joist. Securing the boards to every joist makes the deck more structurally sound, while using two screws on the outer sides of the boards can help prevent warping and cupping.

A few signs that you need a new door frame include:

  • The door no longer fits properly in its frame and sticks or scrapes.

  • You notice cracks, holes, or rotting.

  • You feel a draft coming from around the door when it’s closed.

  • You find yourself frequently needing to make repairs.
