"This project went without a hitch from inception to completion. Smith Remodeling helped me plan, design, and schedule the project from before we had even closed on the purchase of our new home, and worked with me, as I wanted to get on their schedule about 45 days out, coinciding with closing the buy, waiting for the arrival of a custom ordered, pre-hung pine French door, and the time when the house would be empty before we moved in. Their skilled tradesmen were completely professional, friendly, always on time, and meticulous and diligent about every detail of their work. Smith Remodeling came in ON BUDGET and ON TIME, and we couldn't be happier with the addition of this cozy and classy new music rehearsal space and den to our new home."

"I recently hired Real Craftsman LLC to repair hurricane damage to my home, including soffit and gutter replacement, as well as installing a new pool fence. I couldn’t be happier with the results! From start to finish, Real Craftsman LLC and their team were professional, reliable, and highly skilled. They communicated clearly throughout the process, provided a fair and transparent estimate, and completed the job. The soffit and gutters look great and function perfectly, and the pool fence is not only secure but also enhances the look of our outdoor space. It’s rare to find a contractor who is both detail-oriented and efficient, but Real Craftsman LLC exceeded my expectations in every way. I highly recommend them to anyone in need of storm damage repairs or home improvements!"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.

Framing with metal studs can be significantly faster than using wooden studs, provided you have some experience working with the material. While you can use virtually instant pneumatic nailers with wood, metal requires installing screws. However, because metal is lighter, straighter, usually comes cut-to-length, and doesn't require sorting for the best pieces, you can save significant time using metal instead of wood.

You can enclose an open carport, however, there are several things to consider before opting to do so. You'll want to check local building codes and permit requirements before proceeding to make sure it’s legal. While you can sometimes stick-frame a carport enclosure, pre-fab kits are also available. Remember that you'll likely need to meet concrete slab regulations and provide lighting inside the structure. Both of which could substantially drive up costs.

To calculate the number of linear feet of baseboard you’ll need, measure the length of each wall of the room you’re installing them in as close to the floor as possible, rounding up to the next full linear foot. If it’s your first DIY molding job, having a few extra feet on hand for miscuts is a good idea.

Modern brick houses are really stick-built homes with a brick facade for aesthetic purposes only, so most have framing. With genuine brick construction, most homeowners install furring strips over the interior of the brick and then install drywall over those strips to cover the brick wall, so they don’t have traditional framing.
