"If you are a perfectionist and want a job done that will exceed your expectations, hire Garry Stidham! I recently purchased a 40 year old home in Haile in need of much exterior repair. Garry repaired the deck, fence, screened porch and finally all of the rotten wood on the home itself. He was very knowledgeable with regard to materials and paint needed to restore my home to its former glory. Most of the rotten trim and fascia was replaced with Hardie Board which was cut to laser precision. Rotten lap siding was replaced with new pressure treated wood, which he primed before being installed on the home! No one else would go that extra step! After extensive preparation, the home was painted. I cannot explain how happy I am with the final painted results of my home. His abilities with a paint brush on the edges, trim, windows and doors are nothing less than perfection. I could go on and on, but simply stated, Garry will be the only person I will have working on my home."

"I can’t believe there is still a contractor like George and NEM Home remodeling !!!! After working with so many over the years and always being disappointed we were blessed to find NEM. They repaired ceilings that had never been done right, retaped and plastered textured. Repaired walls that had not been taped right from the beginning and painted ceiling, walls, doors and trim. George and his crew were professional, diligent, on time and did an excellent big project. He made sure we were 100% satisfied. Thanks George!"

"We had 2 sheds damaged in a storm by a fallen tree. I had sent a request to 2 other contractors via Home Advisor but received no response from them. I started to send a bad review about them to Home Advisor, but saw another contractor was now listed, being Decked Out. I sent him a request and heard from him the next morning. Boy are we glad the others did not respond! He just finished the job and I will call for other work as needed and I will be referring him to all that need work!"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

It’s important to make sure the wood on a new deck is properly seasoned. Seasoning a deck is simple: Once you build it (or have a pro do so), just leave it alone so it can acclimate to the environment. If you don’t give the deck proper seasoning time before staining, the stain can lock in any lingering moisture and cause mold, rot, and other moisture issues down the road. Give the wood at least four to eight weeks to season before you stain.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

A wood deck requires annual cleaning and regular inspections for loose or broken boards, nails, and screws. It should be refinished by applying a stain or sealer every two to three years to protect the wood from water damage, rot, mildew, and sun fading. The exact frequency can depend on the climate and the deck's exposure to sun and moisture. If your deck is painted, it will need repainting approximately every 10 years. Signs that your deck needs refinishing include faded, splintering, or warping boards.

Most building codes require that spindles or balusters on deck and stair railings be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard, often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' is designed to prevent small children or pets from slipping through the railing. A good way to visualize this is that a 4-inch sphere should not be able to pass between two spindles. For the same safety reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck floor should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is crucial to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

Yes, it is possible to build a small, basic deck for $5,000, particularly if you use less expensive materials and a simple design. To stay within this budget, consider a size under 10x12 feet and use affordable materials like pressure-treated wood or cedar. While the general cost for deck building ranges from $4,350 to $12,560, with an average around $8,200, some projects can be completed for as little as $4,350. You can also save on labor costs by doing the work yourself, but be aware that mistakes could end up costing more than hiring a professional. A contractor may have a higher upfront cost, but they can ensure a safe, stable deck that will last.
