"Larry Doyle repaired the damage to the ceiling and wall. He installed new drywall in both areas and left it looking as if there had never been a leak. He came back twice following the repair to put additional coats of plaster over the new drywall and then smooth it out. He did an excellent job, and I would recommend him to anyone who needs this type of repair."

"I received a call back within 10 minutes of submitting my request on SM. Paul agreed to stop by the next day to provide an estimate on a bathroom ceiling repair (plaster). He was on time and he was courteous and very respectful with us and our home. Upon deciding to contract his services, he showed up on time both days the job required. He did a magnificent job replastering the whole bathroom ceiling. Paul was very tidy in his craft, very clean and very amicable. I am very pleased with the outcome, his price was very fair. Worth every penny. I'd be recommending Plastering Unlimited to family and friends. I'll also call Paul back in the future"

"We started work with Joe over the summer when he did the original work - mid July. We had several rooms that needed to be addressed, but most important was getting the bathroom done. Joe came to do an estimate very quickly. The estimate was extremely fair, well laid out, and he was quick to send it.
The job took the better part of a week. His workers were fabulous - really friendly and put up with our crazy dog who loved them and wanted to know what they were doing. They were very accommodating when we asked questions and dealt with our plumber being there one of the days as well. It was a big job, and they left the house clean and neat at the end of each day which was a huge bonus. The work itself was really good with no problems.  They even put a skim coat over plaster that had cracked during original demo work which was nice.
He said he'd get back to me to schedule the rest of the work. I contacted him in September to schedule the rest of the work, he said he would, and then didn't email me back. I contacted him again the end of November asking to schedule us for the week of Dec 28 and he said that would work which was perfect because my office was closed. My husband and I cancelled our travel plans and cut short our Christmas visit with family so we could be home for the work to be done.
Dec 17 he said he may be finishing up other jobs and asked what my other availability was, which I have none until May which I told him. I received no response until I emailed again on the 27th asking if we were still on, which he said he'd rather not because he'd like to focus on the job completely and asked to figure out another time.
I completely understand that things happen and jobs run over, but it was absolutely devastating to have waited so long and cancel everything. Their original work was perfect, their price was exactly within our budget, and I truly loved the team. I cannot praise them enough for the job they had completed. However, the communication was less than desirable. I really wish we could have had them in for the rest of the work.

"I hired Dominic's Painting to paint the entire exterior of my old (1700's) colonial home in the Summer of 2017. This was a very big project and they did such a fantastic job that I hired them once again to paint (and wallpaper) the interior of my house in late 2017. I was totally satisfied with all the work that they did. They were punctual, hardworking and very professional at all times. I had gotten several other job estimates before hiring them and their price was the most reasonable for the work. John is a pleasure to work with and I have no hesitation in recommending this company to anyone who needs either interior or exterior paining done. I particularly recommend them for the difficult job of painting an old home. My home needed a lot of plastering and special care and nothing was a problem for them. They went above and beyond my expectations-always ready to do anything that was needed. Check this company out before you hire anyone else!"

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

Although they have similar applications, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Their primary differences lie in their composition, consistency, and ideal use cases.

Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it thicker than joint compound. It dries quickly and is easy to sand, which makes it ideal for small wall repair projects like filling nail holes or patching minor damage.

Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum. It is primarily used for large-scale projects, such as taping and finishing the seams on newly installed drywall. It tends to shrink more than spackle and can be more difficult to spread.

While both products can be used to fill small depressions and cracks, spackle cannot replace joint compound for taping and mudding new drywall. Conversely, you can often use joint compound for small patching jobs typically done with spackle.

While you should consult with a ceiling professional for larger cracks, especially if you’re not sure what’s causing your ceiling to crack, you can certainly try to repair small cracks on your own. If you’re up for the task, here’s how to repair ceiling cracks for $150 or less.

Plastering and skimming are two different techniques for finishing walls. Plastering involves applying a thick layer of a plaster mixture—typically containing gypsum, lime, cement, sand, and water—to create a new surface. This process often requires multiple coats and is used for repairing significant damage or creating decorative textures. Skimming, on the other hand, is a technique that involves applying a thin layer of drywall compound or joint compound over an existing surface to smooth it out, covering minor imperfections, small cracks, or uneven textures for a polished look. Plastering is generally more costly and labor-intensive than skimming. Although some people use the terms interchangeably, they refer to different processes and materials.

Whether Venetian plaster increases your home's value often depends on the buyer's preference. As a purely aesthetic upgrade, it doesn't add structural value in the same way a kitchen or bathroom remodel might. However, its beautiful and attractive appearance can make a home more appealing to potential buyers, possibly leading to more interest, higher offers, and increased competition when you sell.

Plaster can be a difficult DIY to master, especially if you plan to plaster an entire room, rather than patch a small area. Before you begin a plaster DIY project, you need to know which tools and type of plaster to use. It's also important to know how to prepare the surface and apply the plaster for a smooth finish. If that all sounds like a lot of work, you may prefer hiring a local plaster repair contractor to do the job.
