"Edgar listened to my request to perform the tasks of insulating the HVAC ductwork and hotwater lines before installing the R30 batts in the joists. He did a good job in cleaning up the fallen insulation pieces from the floor, but there was still residual insulation dust on the floor and on my storage boxes. The tape he used to secure the ductwork insulation batts kept coming undone after he left, which I later re-taped myself. Overall, the quality of the work was great, but the cleanup could only be rated as 'Good'."

"Did a great job on the insulation however they left a hole in the ceiling when they dropped something on the attic floor. Not a big deal but they need to be careful. Overall, amazing work they do all kinds of insulation and they also install radiant barriers on roof joists. They are reasonably priced and the crew is super friendly, pleasure to work with."

"He explained the project choices thoughtfully and provided me his personal cell phone number if I had questions. It appeared to Andrew that our problem was external to the basement and he advised NOT installing a sump, which saved us money, time and anxiety. Very good advice. I'd call him again as soon as the need arises."

"Well, the first time the replacement was ordered it was the wrong one, which of course, delayed the installation a week. When it was finally installed I had to pay an additional $850 for code upgrades. This I was not informed of by Home Shield. Then we noticed that there was water on the garage floor and found that the pipe coming in from the wall was leaking at the wall so had to call the plumbing company back out to fix it. They first tried to say it was not their fault but since there wasn't a leak before they installed they did fix it. I have used Home Shield a few times before and never had a problem. Some of the companies they use are not the best so you have to research them before you commit. I have found HS service to be good if you do your homework. At the end of the day I was without hot water for almost 3 weeks but it was do to the plumbing company they sent out."

"When Mike did the free estimate, he told me it wasn't the walls where we were losing heat. It was my crawl space. Also, totally above the work of insulating the space, he noticed an air duct was disconnected. He got the straps needed to fix the vent and didn't charge me. Excellent customer service. He was neat, on time, and quick with the insulation."

Drywall Insulation questions, answered by experts

Whether Venetian plaster increases your home's value often depends on the buyer's preference. As a purely aesthetic upgrade, it doesn't add structural value in the same way a kitchen or bathroom remodel might. However, its beautiful and attractive appearance can make a home more appealing to potential buyers, possibly leading to more interest, higher offers, and increased competition when you sell.

You should stagger drywall sheets to help prevent cracking. The joints between drywall sheets are the weak spots, so if you install drywall with seams aligned, you’ll create weak lines that run across the length of the wall and extend from floor to ceiling. But when you stagger drywall, the solid sections of panels will support the joints. This can prevent seams from cracking or separating due to fluctuating temperature and humidity, vibrations from movement inside the home, and gravity.

You should always hang drywall from the top down. Starting at the top makes it easier to create a straight, tight line between the ceiling and the wall. Any gaps that occur will be at the bottom, where they are easier to manage. You can either cut the bottom piece of drywall to fit the remaining space or cover the gap with baseboard trim. Additionally, starting at the top is physically easier, as you won't have to fit the top sheet into a tight space between the lower sheet and the ceiling, or try to balance the upper sheets on the lower ones while securing them.

Yes, you can apply new plaster over an existing plaster surface, such as a wall or ceiling, provided the old plaster is in good condition. Before you begin, check the stability of the existing plaster. The surface must be clean, free of loose material, and have no peeling paint. It is also recommended to roughen the surface slightly to promote adhesion. For older plaster, applying a base coat like a PVA emulsion or a specific bonding agent or primer is crucial. This step makes the existing plaster less porous and ensures the new and old layers adhere properly for a smooth, long-lasting finish.

When choosing materials for finishing basement walls, consider factors such as moisture resistance, durability, and fire resistance. Opt for materials specifically designed for basement environments, like moisture-resistant drywall or cement board. Insulation with vapor barriers can help regulate temperature and prevent condensation. Consider using mold-resistant paints or coatings.

Research and consult with experts to select materials that are suitable for your specific basement conditions and intended use. Prioritize quality and compatibility to achieve long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing results.
