"Winston installed a beautiful wrought iron railing extending up two steps and ending on the concrete landing of our front porch. He came when he said he would come and completed the work as promised efficiently and meticulously. I will use him again if I need welding done."

"We hired General Remodeling Group to renovate our DC home and add master bedroom and mudroom additions. They handled everything from the design and permitting (via their architect), to building the foundation, framing, additions, remodeling a bathroom, widening hallways, installing flooring, drywall, HVAC, electricity, plumbing, installing pavers outside and pouring concrete driveway, installing a wheelchair lift, and more. They handled unexpected setbacks well, communicated effectively during the project, and finished the project on-time and on-budget. I would definitely hire them again, and recommend them to anyone doing a home renovation or addition."

"They installed 10 feet of metal railing with nice decorations.  I got 10 different quotes. Some were from Home Advisor. These guys seemed to know what they where doing and their price was really reasonable, so I hired them. Right after the visit to my house, they sent me a quote and I approved it. They had how long it would take for the fabrication and welding time, and they included a schedule for installation. They did it right in the time they quoted. I was very pleased with the job. I would recommend this company to friends and family members.  I will definitely use them again in the future."

"They are extremely efficient and reliable. They've done about 5 different jobs for me and I've been very satisfied with their work. They've painted a powder room and installed a vanity, light and mirror in it, they've installed in-line water filters, and there even put in an area of hardwood flooring. They are fast and friendly, I would definitely recommend them and rely on them for my handyman needs."

"They did a wonderful job making the door fit . The installation was just excellent.  I did a lot of shopping online and had a couple of contractors come out and found the cost of the service with Hammer and Nail to be reasonable and preferred the recommendations of Hammer and Nail.  We went with Hammer and Nail as they seemed to know more as to what needed to be done for the job. They had a very experienced crew that came out and the team lead really knew his job."

"The company did the small repairs fairly well. The issue we had was with the shower repair. The company did not have personnel that could perform the repair and said we needed s plumber. They had already cut a hole into the bathroom from an adjacent closet and said they would get one. Eventually, after several hours and more than $1500 additional dollars, they completed the repair. A neighbor whose house was built at the same time later told us that they had a similar issue with their shower, but the repair was simple to perform and did not require cutting into the wall. The problems were compounded by significant language barriers (Russian), which impeded the workers' ability to communicate about the job, including the supplies we needed to purchase. This caused a lot of aggravation and repeated trips to Home Depot.

"My husband and I were very impressed with the service provided by JLI Services, Inc. We have an existing slate walkway, which was stained with mold and had several loose pieces on the walkway and steps. Additionally much of the grout/cement between the slates had broken apart so we had a lot of gaps in the grout. The overall appearance was unsightly, and we were concerned about safety with the loose slates. I called several companies that were highly rated and described the job. Two companies told me that it would be much more cost effective to rip up the walk and two steps and replace with a brand new walkway. Another company sent someone out to do an estimate, and he said that he could do a cosmetic job which would clean the slates and replace the grout but it wouldn't address the loose slates. He sent a quote for that approach and also for putting in a new walkway. JLI Services responded to my call and discussed options; then project manager Guy Reeser came out to inspect the walk. He agreed that we could use the existing slates and save money by cleaning and repairing what we had. Their quote came in at a much better price than the others. They also were able to get the work done a day before Thanksgiving, thanks to a last minute cancellation, so that we could have a "new walkway"  that would be attractive and safe when our guests arrived.
Guy was on hand both days to inspect the progress of his team. The two men, Joel and Blas, that did the work  did a fantastic job of cleaning the slates, removing all grout, checking bonding of each slate and re-cementing those that needed it, building up the level at the end of the walk, and finishing with new grout throughout. At the end, they replaced everything that they had moved and left the site spotless. They were courteous, happy to answer questions, efficient,, and skilled at their work. Guy was on hand at completion of the work to be sure we were happy with the end product and to give us instructions about when we could use the walkway.
I would use JLI Services again and will recommend them to friends.

"We have used 5th Gen to help finish/correct mistakes that our main renovation contractor made. They have performed with excellent results, the staff is very friendly and we are able to trust the team working around the nice things we have in our home, taking care to cover floors, furniture, etc. We highly recommend them for your new projects as well."

Welding questions, answered by experts

Some welding projects, such as repairing pipes or fences, require travel, whereas others, like furniture repair, do not necessarily require the welder to come to you. Travel and overhead factor into the overall cost of your welding project. Some of the most common welding projects include:

  • Metal furniture repair: $35–$100

  • Pipe repair: $200–$1,000

  • Small gates: $550–$750

  • Fencing: $1,200–$1,800

  • Fabricated sheet metal welding: $750–$2,500

Cutting rectangular ductwork requires careful measurements and the right technique. Use a measuring tape and pencil to mark the cutting lines accurately. Tin snips are excellent for straight cuts on smaller ducts. For more extensive or thicker rectangular ducts, a reciprocating saw with a metal-cutting blade is effective.

Ensure the duct is well-supported and secure while cutting to prevent wobbling and maintain precision. After cutting, use a metal file to smooth any sharp edges, ensuring safety during installation.

Since water heaters are primarily made of metal, they’re commonly accepted by scrap yards and collectors. Don’t expect to fetch a high price, though—water heaters are mostly steel and aluminum, which aren’t high-value metals. Some components are made of more valuable metals, like brass and copper, but they’re a small portion of the heater and won’t affect the price much.

Your typical household tools will not cut a metal pipe. To cut a metal pipe, you’d need more specialized tools like a pipe cutter or circular saw. Do not attempt to use these tools without taking proper safety precautions and wearing safety gear. It’s usually safer to let a pro cut a metal pipe, especially if you’re not confident in your skills with a heavy-duty saw.

Yes, you can cut plexiglass by hand using a sharp knife or blade (utility knife, box cutter, glass cutter, etc.).
