"Thank you North American Chimney & Gutter Corp team for coming out to check and clean my chimney. We use our fireplace pretty regularly so I knew we needed to get someone out here soon to clean it out. It was very easy to schedule (and re-schedule) my appointment thanks to Amy. Some homes with wood-burning fireplaces don't have ash pits due to design choices, construction practices, or the age of the house. Many older abodes don't have them because ash pits weren't a standard feature when they were built. Additionally, in smaller homes or homes with less frequent fireplace use, builders might have opted to forgo an ash pit to reduce costs or simplify maintenance.

When your fireplace burns, chemicals like sulfur or calcium can release from the fuel leading to white stuff appearing on the glass. However, it could also signal an issue with your fireplace. If you notice crystal deposits, it indicates either your flame isn’t burning properly or venting well. 

There are a few things you can look out for to ensure your chimney is safe to use. Check for the following issues:

  • Cracks or missing pieces in the masonry of the chimney

  • Creosote buildup in the chimney, which is a black, tar-like substance

  • Cracks, stains, or scorch marks in the firebox

  • Water stains in or around the fireplace

  • A broken or stuck damper

You should use an angled brush to first paint the mortar lines, then go in with a high-density roller to evenly paint the bricks one at a time. You can also use a flat paintbrush to paint individual bricks, but a roller is faster and easier to use thanks to its longer handle and wider surface area for coating the bricks. To finish, go in with the paint brush for edges or hard-to-reach areas.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says that chimneys and their associated elements like fireplaces, vents, or stoves should be cleaned at least once a year before the start of seasonal use. According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America, a chimney should be cleaned when there is 1/8 inch of soot buildup. If there’s more than that, creosote—a flammable byproduct of burning wood—can form and increase the risk of a chimney fire.
