"We had an issue with a gurgling toilet at our condo in Greenwich. Tony was incredibly responsive. He answered the phone at 7am and came to our condo the same day. He clearly communicated each step of the procedure to unclog the drain. He was professional, patient and polite. Tony recommended a descaling process to prevent a recurrence. He explained the pricing in detail and it seemed reasonable and fair. I am very happy with the service provided by Tony and United Sewer and would not hesitate to recommend him."

"very prompt when called. Met the owner and received a reasonable estimate along with a clear description of what needed to happen and an itemized list. The guy who actually did the job did it well but left a little bit of a mess I then had to clean up. Not bad at all though. replaced a toilet pipe and fixed an erroneous down grade on a shower drain for me about a year ago and everything is still going well!"

"Someone called back right away and schedule to come to our home at 10am. They were 4 hours late. Two guys, one seem to be professional and knew what he is doing. They checked 3 bathrooms and drain pipe, and suggested I replace the flappers, seal one of the toilets, and put epoxy around the possible crack in one of the drain pipes. The whole job took less than an hour and cost me 620 dollars. I am new a home owner and don't have much experience, and I did not request a quote in writing, but I was told in the beginning that smoke test will cost 550, if it comes to it. They did not do it. I feel they used my inexperience to gain. Not to mention, that the problem of smell remained unfixed and I did not see any changes in how toilets work."

"Great! I called yesterday, and they said they would work me into the schedule today and would call me before coming. H.L. Bowman called today and said the plumber would be here in 20 minutes, and he was. He did a great job and installed the toilet in less than an hour, cleaned up and took our old toilet, the box and all packing materials from the new toilet along with him. He also installed a new designer arm on the toilet instead of the one that came on it. He was very nice and professional. Would definitely use him again."

Small jobs welcome

"I was a little upset when, after 15 minutes past the appointment time, I tested them to find out where they were and when I got a call back they said "They forgot about me because I booked so far in advance" (I had made the appointment the week before). However, I was happy when they said they were pulling someone from another job to come to my house right away. Lino, the installer was great. He did a great job and was very personable. Also, it was great that they hauled away the old toilet. Every other plumbing quote I got did not include removal & disposal. I will definitely use them again."

"Cliff quickly responded to us and we explained the problem. He asked if this was the only toilet we had in the house and we said no. He scheduled an appointment for the next day and had me text him a picture of the inside of our toilet tank and valve so that he knew what to expect. He texted me when he was on his way and he arrived at the time we had scheduled. When the work was completed he asked if there was anything else we needed done while he was there. We will keep his number handy for any future plumbing needs."

Toilets questions, answered by experts

Yes, continuing to flush a clogged toilet is not likely to break up the clog. Instead, it will continue to put pressure on the clog while filling the bowl with more water, which can potentially cause the toilet to overflow—leading to an even bigger mess. Rather than repeatedly flushing, use a toilet plunger or plumber’s snake to dislodge the clog.

You can tell if your toilet fill valve is full by removing the lid and taking a look. When you flush the toilet, the float is at the bottom of the tank, the water empties, and the fill valve opens. The float rises to the top as the tank fills again with water. When the float rises to the right level, the fill valve closes; if the valve is too high, your toilet may only partially flush, requiring you to adjust the float.

A high pitch noise after flushing is likely caused by the fill valve being clogged with debris. You can repair this and eliminate the noise by removing the fill valve from the tank, and then cleaning the valve screen. Place the clean fill valve back in the tank and flush as normal.

Yes, you can have a toilet without a septic tank. However, it will have to be a composting toilet. Composting toilets work similarly to aerobic septic systems in that the waste, which sits in a separate compartment below the toilet itself, is slowly broken down by aerobic bacteria. These toilets typically have a vent to get rid of harmful gasses with a fan, which requires a battery. You will have to dispose of waste in the toilet manually every three weeks to every three months, depending on how many people are using the toilet.

The main cause of bathroom leaks is seals and connectors that loosen or deteriorate over time, causing leaks to develop. It's important to stay on top of your bathroom materials, as toilets, showers, and sinks all have different lifespans. Toilets and faucets last between 10 and 15 years on average with regular maintenance, but different parts may have shorter lifespans than others.
