"Al was fantastic! He clearly explained that my fireplace was shutting off as a safety feature due to low oxygen levels. He also reassembled the logs in the firebox and showed me the proper way to start and stop the fireplace. Highly recommend his service!"

"As a fact all home owners know that Chimney sweeps or the chimney companies have the worst reputation of being crooks! No one is going to go up on to the roof to follow the Chimney guy to see what they are doing or if they are even telling you the truth about what's wrong with your chimney. Having said all that, I very highly recommend this company because from the time I made the appointment to the time the work was completed it was a wonderful experience. The cost was most reasonable and most of all very honest:) I say this because I had 7 estimates from different chimney companies for the same work and every one of them had a different price quote and one chimney guy actually went up to the chimney and started pealing the existing clay chimney liner and threw some down the chimney and some on to the lawn just to get a chimney liner work from me. Certified Chimney not only cleaned up the mess and blockage created by the other guy but did the job for less than what the other guy wanted. The work was clean perfect and I couldn't have asked for a better all around work that was done by Certified Chimney people the true professionals:) the work involved placing a double wall stainless steel chimney liner cutting open the wall in the house by the furnace resealing it as well as opening up the brick work on the outside wall of the chimney and finishing the brick and cement work outside. I thank them very much."

"Thank you North American Chimney & Gutter Corp team for coming out to check and clean my chimney. We use our fireplace pretty regularly so I knew we needed to get someone out here soon to clean it out. It was very easy to schedule (and re-schedule) my appointment thanks to Amy. Marco and Micheal showed up early and was in and out very quickly. They left my fireplace in awesome condition and assured me that it was safe to use. These guys are the best punctual, and no pressure re: additional services. I would highly recommend!"

"Saul was terrific! He was referred to me by a client that recommended his exceptional work. We had an emergency situation regarding our collapsed fireplace. He came out ASAP to assess the job and put us ahead of gua other clients due to its prompt attention needed. Would highly recommend this company. Very professional, intelligent, thorough and the price was fair. We will be yaing this company in the spring to rebuild our fireplace!!"

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Removing and demolishing a fireplace is extremely labor intensive work that also takes a long time. You need to use brute strength to break apart the brick and masonry, and carry the debris to a dumpster. Depending on the size of the structure, you may need multiple days to fully remove it. After removal, you need to determine how you will repair the wall that held the fireplace, which can also be quite time consuming and challenging.

Depending on the model of your fireplace, you can leave your pilot light on year-round. This does use a small amount of fuel, so you’ll save on your energy bill by turning off the pilot light seasonally. Keep in mind that some gas fireplace models don’t have a standing pilot light.

Once your ashes have fully cooled, you can place them in a heavy-duty trash bag and put them into the bin with your normal trash. If you have wood ash, you can add the ash to your composting pile or sprinkle it over your grass or plants directly for added nutrients.

Wood is classified as either hardwood or softwood. For firewood, hardwoods are generally the best choice as they tend to burn longer, hotter, and produce less smoke than softwoods. Recommended hardwoods include oak, hickory, maple, cherry, ash, beech, birch, elm, and walnut. Oak is a particularly good option as it's widely available, slow-burning, and doesn't produce much smoke or sparks. Some woods, like oak, hickory, and cherry, also emit a pleasant scent. It is best to avoid softwoods such as eucalyptus, poplar, and willow, as they create a lot of smoke and have a high moisture content that makes them difficult to light and burn efficiently.

Chimney caps may be installed by a few different professionals, including a chimney sweep or a mason that specializes in fireplaces and chimneys. A gas fireplace technician is the best person to install a chimney cap on a gas log fireplace vent to be sure the cap is appropriate for the application.
