"We had a great experience with Arnold's Masonry. After interviewing several local masons, we chose Arnold to build a concrete sidewalk from our front steps to our driveway. We hired Arnold for his obvious knowledge, expertise, and experience. There was excellent communication and customer service throughout the process. We love our new sidewalk, and we highly recommend Arnold's Masonry!"

"Our basement has a huge sloping rock in it-the foundation was built around it when the house was built in the 50's. Over the past 5-6 years, water has seeped in more and more at the top of the rock where it meets the ground right next to the foundation and rolled down the rock to the cellar floor, threatening to flow over to the finished side of the basement. First we put a new drainage system outside the house but that did not help. Five years ago we had another basement company come and they told us all we would need is a dehumidifier and that would dry up the water. We bought their big dehumidifier but nope, that did not make a dent in it, it has just gotten worse each year. I called CT Basement Systems late last fall and a very, very nice representative came, looked at the rock and the water flowing down it and was confident their system would take care of the problem. I have a friend that used them for water in her basement and she has raved about them and has never had a drop of water since her system was installed. I paid the deposit and the technicians came exactly when they said they would. They did a great job, were very professional and left the cellar area very clean in spite of all the dust that must have been generated by the jackhammering. I am very happy with the job they did. However, there has been one unexpected problem. Before the drain was put in, I had been buying absorbent socks, flood bags and all kinds of things to soak up the water. Now we just let the water course down the rock into the drain guard, which then funnels it to the sump. We discovered that some of the water drains down to our brick chimney, which abuts the big rock . Instead of continuing it's flow down the rock to the drain, some water is soaking into the gravel around the chimney and then coming out on the other side, where there is no drain guard, making puddles on the floor again. We think the rock needs a thin lip of cement to direct the flow down and away from the chimney area. So, I called the salesman. No call back. I emailed him. No reply. I called and left another message but nothing. I called the company and asked if they would give him a message to call me. No response. So, I can only surmise that they are completely uninterested in this, now that the job is done. I now have a mason coming to do the cement. It is too bad, because I was so impressed with the salesman when he came and also with the installers. I would recommend the product and the installation service beyond a shadow of a doubt. But the lack of customer service after the fact is a huge disappointment. I actually do not mind having our own mason come and do the job. If they had called me back, I would have told them that- I really just wanted to get their opinion on the problem. But they apparently just don't want to be bothered."

"My wife and I were experiencing water issues in December of 2019. We went through every company you can think of that works the State of Connecticut. We really had 2 companies that we were intrigued to hire. We decided to go with American Dry Basement Systems, because of their process/procedure in cutting the basement floor. As well as applying the super-slurry and super-crete. A crucial piece that was taken into consideration as our home was built in the early 1940's. Having the peace of mind the structural integrity wasn't disturbed, waterproofing concept, and not introducing cold joints. Dennis was amazing when he entered our home, he explained everything. Of course he knew it was a touchy subject since our basement was finished. To need demo and reconstruction was a big concern, however we knew to correct the issue was the most important aspect. Dennis received a lot of phone calls from me, he definitely was easy going on every question I had and help ease our minds. Within 3 weeks of signing everything the work started. The crew lead by Jamey were great!! They were able to get the concrete opened up and partially trenched within a day. We wanted the guys to work in an environment they enjoyed. We offered them soda and water. We even gave them a bluetooth speaker to use while they were working to enjoy music. They were very thankful for our hospitality we showed them. After all said in done, the work was completed to our satisfaction, they was a slight issue with the concrete level to the existing floor. I let the customer service reps know and have scheduled a foreman to come by the house on Wednesday. Overall I am giving American Dry Basement Systems a 5 Star rating it has been an absolute pleasure for the company to customer / customer to company relationship. The representatives, sales, and construction employee were all fantastic!! I can't wait to see this system work better to keep our basement dry!!! Thank you a bunch!!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Sealing cracked foundations and repointing joints stops cold drafts, directly improving your home's thermal efficiency during cold winters. Properly waterproofed foundations block moisture, preventing mold growth and musty odors in your basement. Additionally, repairing retaining walls stops soil erosion on hilly properties. Completing necessary masonry work ensures safe chimney venting and protects your property value in the competitive Hamden market.

Helpful?

A major mistake is applying modern, hard cement on soft historic brick, which traps moisture and destroys the brick face. Homeowners also err by scheduling masonry work late in the fall when temperatures drop below freezing, preventing proper curing. Finally, treating white salt deposits as a cosmetic issue ignores serious underlying water infiltration common in the clay-heavy soils across CT.

Helpful?

Always hire licensed contractors with active general liability and workers' compensation insurance. Your pro must understand local permit requirements for structural projects. Choose experts experienced with historic brick types and the specific glacial till soils found throughout CT. A knowledgeable professional will use the correct mortar mixes designed to withstand the region's harsh freeze-thaw cycles, ensuring your masonry work lasts for years to come.

Helpful?

Look for spalling bricks, white salt deposits, or cracked chimney crowns after winter. Hamden experiences intense freeze-thaw cycles that expand small cracks into serious damage. Schedule masonry work between late April and October, when temperatures stay above 40 degrees. Avoid winter repairs, as cold weather prevents mortar from curing properly. Addressing these signs early keeps your home safe and structurally sound before the next freeze hits.

Helpful?

Foundation repairs disrupt interior waterproofing systems or sump pumps. Rebuilding retaining walls shifts yard grading and impacts underground utilities. If your Hamden home relies on a traditional chimney for heating, repairs alter venting performance and introduce carbon monoxide risks. Always consult a local professional before starting masonry work to safely manage hazardous materials and coordinate necessary heating system inspections.
