The average-sized home in the U.S.—around 2,500 square feet—will require between 15 and 34 solar panels to power the whole home. The specific number, however, will have less to do with home size and more to do with how much energy you use each year and the amount of sunlight in your region.

Installing solar panels involves drilling small holes in your roof to secure the solar panel mounting brackets. These brackets hold the solar panels in place and must withstand strong weather conditions so they’re secured into your roof.
