"I cannot say enough about Bob. I've used him for many years. I feel that his work is extraordinarily good and his fees are not outrageous. I can trust him and leave him in the house even when we are at work. He will even let the dog out for us. He didn't even charge me for the cabinets, he wanted to take them back to the original maker since he recommended the maker, he didn't want to charge for taking them back or reinstalling them. He always backs up his work to the people he refers us to. He's impeccably neat with his clean up! He will even take his shoes off when he comes into the house, so he doesn't track anything in the house. It was important to us that he is an animal lover, when they were updating our house I had trust that the animals were fine."

"Brian and his team did a very thorough job replacing the roof. The team stripped off the old roof quickly and kept the surrounding area clean. Brian paid particular attention to getting the job done in a way that would prevent damage from ice dams. The lead flashing he did around the chimney looks like it was done by a real artisan. New gutters, downspouts, and leaf-guards were installed with high quality materials an attention to detail."

"Excellent! This remodel could not have gone better. Attention to detail describes Karol and his team. We let Karol's team work at our house when we were not at home. They arrived on time, cleaned up each day. They put up a plastic wall to minimize the dust in the rest of the house. Karol answered all our questions and accomodated some changes during the remodel with no problem. The floor was a big concern for us since the slab was higher than the adjacent wood floor. Karol minimized the step between rooms to less than 1/2 inch. Everything was done to perfection. No cost overruns except the items we added during the project. This project was a pleasure working with Karol and team. Highly recommend KBK Construction. This was a complicated remodel that Karol handled with ease. Very talented and honest business. Our kitchen is beautiful. So glad we contracted with KBK Construction."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

A custom home is one that you design from the ground up, allowing you to customize everything from the square footage to the interior layout to all of the materials used. A spec home is one that a builder has designed and gotten approvals for. Spec homes may give you some limited options for the layout and materials, but most of the build is pre-set. Custom homes cost more and take longer to build.

Handypeople usually don’t hold trade licenses, so they typically aren’t qualified to tackle projects involving installing or making alterations to plumbing or electrical lines. Below are some jobs that a handyperson usually won’t be able to complete:

  • Installing plumbing for a new kitchen or bathroom

  • Replacing plumbing pipes

  • Installing or repairing septic systems

  • Running new electrical wiring

  • Installing a subpanel

The most significant expense when building a barndominium is constructing the metal shell, which includes the roof, doors, and windows. Additional exterior components impacting the overall cost include metal siding and the concrete foundation.

Craftsman-style homes are predominantly found in the Western United States, specifically in Southern California, where the style originated. Since the climate was mild and there was access to plenty of natural resources, Southern California became a hub for this style at its inception. That being said, if you consult with an architect near you, you can have a Craftsman-style home anywhere.

The primary reason homes have crawl spaces is so the foundation can reach down below the frost line to avoid dangerous soil movement and structural damage when the ground freezes. They’re more popular in colder climates where the ground freezes down to a few feet, and slabs are most popular in warmer areas where there is no frost line. Crawl spaces also provide a space for utility lines to run where they’re at less of a risk of freezing.
