"What a pleasant experience I had with Advanced Construction Roofing. I was honestly not looking forward to having my roof replaced. I have only gone through this process once before with a different company and it was not a good experience at all. With ACR it was easy on my part. Peter came and looked at the roof, came back when my insurance adjuster came to look at it and honestly handled everything from that point on. Good news—asphalt shingles, including architectural shingles, are easily recycled. Talk to your roofing contractor to find out if recycling options are available in your area.

If recycling isn't available, your roofing contractor may recommend renting a dumpster, if your project is on the large side, or collecting the shingles in contractor bags to throw them away. Another option may be to donate new or gently used shingles to a local nonprofit.

While two-layer torch down roofs are easier to install than three-layer roofing, it is best not to DIY the installation. Torch down roofs require expert knowledge of the application process to get it right the first time and prevent leaks or poor craftsmanship, not to mention that roof work can be dangerous.

The most common slope range for roofs on houses in snowy areas is between 4/12 and 6/12, or 50%. A roof with a slope of less than 10%, or roughly a 2/12 pitch, won’t be effective at shedding snow. However, roofs that are too steep can allow large amounts of snow to build up and fall all at once, creating a hazard for those on the ground.

A roof replacement will usually include removal of your old roof, shingle replacement, and a new roof underlayment, but it may only include adding new shingles if you’re layering new shingles over the old shingles. If you have signs of roof leaks or your roofer finds water damage to the roof decking underneath your old roof, it can also include replacement of the OSB or plywood decking that lays over your rafters and supports the roofing material above.

Roof work is dangerous and exacting, and a misstep could lead to even more costly repairs, so we do not recommend DIYing. If you are dead set on giving it a go, practice safety measures. Wear a harness, only work during mild weather, and have a partner to help. Potentially DIY-friendly jobs include patching up small leaks, sealing areas around the chimney, and replacing a few shingles.
