"From initial project conception through construction, working with Mr. Krenger has been an absolute pleasure. Never before have I hired such a responsive and prompt Contractor who never made me feel like I was being taken advantage of. All of that is great, but it is the second-to-none quality workmanship that will make me hire Krenger Construction again for my next landscaping project."

"Our project was to rip out decade old and rotted railroad ties for our back and front yards. We had already had other beds put in and needed the brick to match. We also had some irrigation maintenance needs. Bill and his team at CitiScape were able to find the exact material to match and easily had it installed. What was more important is they did it for a quote that was very reasonable and did it within the the time they had outlined. They left the home in great shape and per my wife, the crew was very courteous during the job. Would highly recommend as we will be using CitiScape again on our next project."

"I called Arturo to put up some garden walls in the front of my house. He was very punctual (something I was having an issue with with other contractors). After speaking with him about the walls, I quickly came to the conclusion that he could be my answer for the patio I was wanting to build. Arturo did a BEAUTIFUL job. He had lots of great suggestions and we ended up with garden walls, a new sidewalk and a fantastic patio. I would hire Arturo again - he was a pleasure to work with and really more than just a masonry guy - he is quite the artist!"

"David and his crew did a great job installing our new irrigation and sprinkler system - their service is EXCELLENT. David is both accessible and responsive as there were a few times when we had extra requests (tree pruning and stump removal) and he will make time for you and your specific needs. His crew's flexibility and ability to show up when needed to help (i.e. adjust drip line for backyard plantings) is a real value for the money/investment to a project. I will hire them again for my other landscaping needs."

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

Sand and gravel are two suitable options for filling behind a retaining wall. If you’re building your own retaining wall, you’ll complete this part of the process—known as backfilling—after you finish laying the blocks. Make sure not to skip it—otherwise, you could wind up with drainage issues, which can cause your retaining wall to collapse.

Failure to compact the soil during construction is the most common cause of leaning retaining walls. In addition, poor drainage can lead to excessive water pressure behind a retaining wall, pushing against it until it begins to move forward away from the soil it is holding back.

The longevity of flood walls depends on how they were constructed, but most wood, gravel, and cement flood walls last 10 years. While aluminum flood walls may cost far more initially, they can be a good investment as they can last decades and will not be damaged by exposure to the elements.

Poured concrete is often the cheapest material for a retaining wall, costing around $6 to $8 per square foot. Other budget-friendly options include vinyl and landscaping timbers, which range from $10 to $15 per square foot; landscaping timbers are particularly well-suited for DIY projects. Untreated timber and railroad ties are a step up in price, starting at $15 to $25 per square foot. Natural stones can also be a cost-effective choice if you can source them from your own property, but they can be expensive to purchase. High-end materials like steel are typically the most expensive but offer superior durability and aesthetics.

Proper design and construction prevent erosion and add structural stability to landscapes.
