"Kept their schedule and kept us informed as the project progressed. Courteous workers and the salesman, Richard was very professional and friendly. Reported damage but now found it to be the loss of some gutter helmet and the nailing of the end guard to the roof which destroys the function of the guard. The end piece was missing so instead to telling me they just nailed the end to the room instead of keeping with the functional design of the gutter. No satisfaction and a hassle when first reporting the initial problem as seen at that time."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

The material and frequency of maintenance are the biggest factors for determining the longevity of your shingles, not the color. For instance, luxury asphalt shingles can last 30 years or even longer, while slate tiles have an impressive lifespan ranging from 75 to 100 years. That said, lighter-colored shingles can help reduce your energy costs in the summertime.

You should hire a roofing professional to install a metal roof, as it’s an essential part of your home and a difficult installation. Your roof provides the most protection for your home among all of the building materials, and any mistakes made during the installation process can quickly lead to roof leaks, water damage, and significant repair costs. A roofing professional will ensure your new roof is installed properly and according to building code to minimize that risk, and they will usually back the installation and materials with a roof warranty for added peace of mind.

Roofing felt is the most common type of roof underlayment, likely because it has been around the longest. It’s called roofing felt because it is often made of felt soaked in asphalt. Depending on the type of roofing a home has, roofing felt comes in different thicknesses.

If properly installed and maintained, roofing felt should last between 10 and 25 years.

A roof replacement will usually include removal of your old roof, shingle replacement, and a new roof underlayment, but it may only include adding new shingles if you’re layering new shingles over the old shingles. If you have signs of roof leaks or your roofer finds water damage to the roof decking underneath your old roof, it can also include replacement of the OSB or plywood decking that lays over your rafters and supports the roofing material above.

Fall is widely considered the best time of year to replace a roof. The moderate temperatures are ideal for roofing crews to work and for new shingles to seal properly. Additionally, autumn weather is often drier, reducing the risk of weather-related delays compared to the rainier spring season.

While spring is also a viable option, the higher chance of rainfall can slow down the project. The main drawback to a fall installation is that it's the peak season for roofers, which can lead to higher prices and scheduling challenges.

To potentially save money, you could consider scheduling your roof replacement during the summer or winter off-seasons. However, both seasons have significant disadvantages. Extreme summer heat can make shingles too soft to handle, while winter's cold, snow, and ice can create dangerous working conditions and prevent shingles from sealing correctly, as they typically require temperatures above 40-45°F.
