Small jobs welcome

"The pressure pump on our well system failed on July 4th. We have a irrigation system for our extensive home vegetable garden and dreaded the prospect of hand watering half an acre of crops. Romero (The owner of Quality Pump Service) returned our phone call over the holiday weekend within a hour. They are a family run business. He was willing to come to our home and install a temporary pump on Sunday as a new pump would not be available for two days (Remember it is the July 4th Holiday weekend). In short, we were completely repaired in two days with a new pump and new pressure tank. We checked on-line retailers to see if Romero had overcharged us for the new components. He was within 5% of the average retail price which would have been our cost if we had fixed the system ourselves. His team was fast, pleasant and professional and given the holiday emergency response very fairly priced. We feel we can highly recommend Quality Pump Services."

"It was okay. He spent about 20 to 30 minutes on the phone with the manufacturer of the water heater in order to troubleshoot what was wrong with it. I didn't think he knew the material as well as he should have. We had to pay an extra 30 minutes of labor. He did come on time."

"Vortex Filtration Inc is a excellent company with vast experience & knowledge in conditioning potable well water. I recommend Vortex Filtration Inc to design build and install their patented Vortex water system to solved all well water conditioning issues. My client had a problem for over tens years prior to the installation of the Vortex system. Once installed, the well water in the holding tank was crystal clear. Thanks Vortex!"

"Rick and Steve are veteran plumbers with about 40 years of experience in the business. When they arrived at our home, they wasted no time in getting to work on installing a new toilet, installing new flexible hoses in our three bathrooms sinks the kitchen sink, and toilets. They also installed the newer shut off valves. The major job for them was to install a new water pressure regulator from behind the wall in our garage to be installed on the outside of the house next to the water shut off valve. They also replaced the leakng hose connected to our water softener and to insure that it was operating properly. The new pressure regulator relieved the knocking noise that was intermittent depending on the weather conditions. Since It's been installed, we've not experienced any knocking at all. We're very happy about this. Some of the work they did was not so easy, but they prevailed and all the work was done in an expeditious manner. We found their fees for all the work includiing parts was very resonable compared to many plumbers who would have charged us much more for all the work they performed. We highly recommend them, and we would not hesitate to call upon them in the future. They are reliable and honest. They are truly experts in the plumbing business."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

You should not use a water conditioner with a water softener because a water conditioner changes the chemistry of the water and causes the ion exchange in a softener to be ineffective. Choose a water softener if you have hard water or well water, and use a water conditioner if you need to remove certain contaminants.

Whether you need a permit or license for a water softener installation depends on your location, as requirements vary significantly. Some municipalities require the installer to hold a plumbing license, some mandate a permit and an inspection, and others require both. In some areas, no special permit or license is needed at all.

To determine the rules in your area, you can contact your local building department or consult a local water softener installer or plumber. Often, only certified professionals are authorized to pull the necessary permits, and they will typically handle the entire permitting process for you. Regardless of local laws, it is always recommended to hire a licensed professional to ensure the system is sized and installed correctly. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to check an installer’s license status.

Most of the U.S. has hard water, especially across portions of the West and Midwest. The areas with the hardest water include parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Illinois, North and South Dakota, Ohio, and New York. You’ll find soft water in parts of New England, the Southeast, the Pacific Northwest, and Hawaii.

Yes. To get soft water, you can install a water softening system, which will replace the calcium and magnesium ions in the water with sodium or potassium ions. Water softeners cost anywhere from $200 to $6,000, depending on the size and complexity of the system. You can either install a water softener for the whole house or just at your shower heads. If you’re sensitive to sodium or potassium, you can install a salt-free water conditioner.

It’s not a good idea to oversize your water softener. Doing so will mean the tank doesn’t get full, which can lead to channeling. This leads to a large portion of the resin beads not being utilized and the beads at the bottom of the tank being overused. Over time, this will reduce the efficiency of your system, not to mention that the upfront cost of an oversized softener is unnecessarily high. If you have a timed regeneration cycle rather than a demand-based one, you’ll also spend far more on replacing salt than you need to.
