To keep window wells from filling up with water, you need to stay on top of maintenance. Remove debris as it fills up, and regularly loosen the gravel at the base if it’s become compacted. You can also reslope your yard to make sure water flows away from the window well (and your home’s foundation), and you can even install a window well cover to prevent debris from building up. For disposal clogs with standing water, use a sink plunger and place it over the garbage disposal drain. Push the sink plunger up and down the drain about six to eight times before lifting. Start by pouring hot—but not boiling—water down the drain. The heat of the water may be enough to break down the clog. You can also try ½ cup of dish soap or 1 cup each of white vinegar and baking soda. If you choose a chemical unclogging product, ensure it’s appropriate for toilets to avoid damage.

This is the same plumbing that sinks and shower drains run to, and if the U-bend is installed correctly, it shouldn’t smell. The total drainage from the house is then integrated into the city sewer system or, if you’re in the country, dispersed into a septic tank.

It is almost always better to try snaking a clog than using a drain cleaner, but the best solution is to hire a professional plumber. They can locate the clog and gauge the severity using a camera system and then decide if using a plumber’s snake, auger, or drain cleaner is the best option to remove the clog and limit damage to your plumbing system.
