"They designed and built my new home. At the beginning the process was a little rough but soon after a conversation with the owner the whole building process was top notch! Extremely impressed by the great quality of work and very professional people."

"Don from I Construction is a total professional. Having run through a few contractors on the same issue, I can see how Don is a cut above the rest. He is thorough and a perfectionist. The reason I cannot hire him yet is because I am still waiting on the funding for my project. Once you talk to Don, you will see what I mean by this man being a 5 star professional."

"Enrique and his team tackled a number of small to medium size projects from painting to door frame repair to drywall removal and replacement. The team was on time each day and ensured that the days task list was completed before leaving for the day. They ensured the work areas were organized and cleaned after each day. They were professional, easy to work with and their pricing was competitive. Would highly recommend them for any general construction or handyman projects you have."

"I had Diego install banisters up my stairs in my 1916 Edwardian. He was very careful to make sure that they blended with the rest of the house. The work was meticulous and he was very attentive to my needs and desires in the hand rails appearance. The work was accomplished in a timely manner, his clean was great. I can now walk up and down the stairs safely and the banisters feel like they have been here forever. I highly recommend Diego for any work you might need."

Customers say: True professional

"We found McCormick home builders through Angie’s list. They were not one of our original contacts, but they contacted us and came out to give us a quote. Matteo was extremely helpful, informative, honest, and gave us reasonable realistic prices, and did not try to inflate the prices or pressure us in anyway. We felt very comfortable with him immediately. We felt like he was a member of the family that we could just talk to and ask questions he was very personable. He gave us his contact number in case we had other questions and he was always available when we needed him for any type of questions or concerns. Mateo‘s team did a beautiful job. They were fast. They were efficient. They cleaned up beautifully. They did a wonderful job. They were very considerate of our time our needs and our neighbors. They were an absolute pleasure to work with. I would highly recommend Matteo from McCormick home builders for any home building projects, and we will be calling him again in the future!"

"Digital Living did our entire home audio system/speakers throughout the house, TV and internet installation when we moved to Sonoma. Derick, and his team, lead by Matt, did an amazing job with the installation, and were also a wonderful resource for recommending the right equipment/speakers along with boosters to make sure the internet worked throughout the house (not an easy feat on this mountain) and to make sure we knew how to use the system before they departed us. They are technical wizards, very professional and have great ideas regarding esthetics for speaker placement and better sound. They care a lot about building relationships with with their customers and have great customer service post installation for the occasional question/tweak over the last 2 years! I call them the dream team for home technology installations!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.

Most load-bearing walls are exterior, though they can also be interior.

If you remove a load-bearing wall to create an entrance to a carport or covered patio, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. Factors such as the type of addition and if that area needs additional work will add to the price.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

Framing with metal studs can be significantly faster than using wooden studs, provided you have some experience working with the material. While you can use virtually instant pneumatic nailers with wood, metal requires installing screws. However, because metal is lighter, straighter, usually comes cut-to-length, and doesn't require sorting for the best pieces, you can save significant time using metal instead of wood.
