"Mark and his crew are fantastic. We had a small job (by their standards) done...just a complete shower rebuild but they handled it very well. Mark had some great ideas that improved the project and every member of his crew was professional and pleasant to deal with. The final result was actually better than we had envisioned."

"They did a great job. They rebuilt my closet, hung curtain rods, fixed a kitchen cabinet and drawers as well as a few other small projects. It was very reasonably priced and done quickly. I would definitely hire again."

Small jobs welcome

"Dave did great work for us. We wanted to update three bathrooms. Dave replaced the floors, vanities, mirrors, and all the fixtures. He also brought in a subcontractor to reglazed the tubs. Dave finished on time, on budget, and the work looks great. I will definitely call Dave next time I need a contractor or handyman."

"Leo was very helpful and quick to respond. We’re happy with how our 2 bathrooms turned out. Project was completed within the time promised. Our only complaint is that the workers did not clean up very well. But overall, we’re satisfied and we’ll use them again."

"Danny took on our project, which was to build a home on an oddly-shaped, canyon side lot. We hired him as he had experience building on hillsides as well as with working with our architect. Ours was a very difficult project; from Coastal Commission to City approval, as well as with structural engineering. Danny had a plan for how to access and install our caissons into the hillside from day one. Not only that, his crew and sub-contractors showed up everyday, on-time for our year and a 1/2 building period. We communicated nearly every day via text or phone calls; Danny and his supervisor Scott were always VERY responsive. They were also open to alternate ideas in order to cut down construction costs. We've now been in our new home one year, and can honestly say that we are very happy with the craftsmanship and quality of our home. Moreover, the few small issues that we have had (garage door opener; low water pressure), Danny has continued to be responsive and to send his team back out to assist us over this past year. Overall, DM Building is an honest and earnest group of builders who only want the best for your project. I highly recommend DM Building, and would be happy to discuss their work further with anyone who is looking for a custom home builder or looking to embark on a large remodel project. Here are our pix from DM Building's website: [*** Link removed ***] and from our architect's site: [*** Link removed ***] Sincerely, -Susan Spencer [email protected]"

"Stel Construction handled the project on time and within budgeted amount.  All sub-contractors on the job were polite and very professional.  Stel Construction contact Seth Larson communicated with us throughout the process and made sure the work was satisfactory."

Storm Shelters questions, answered by experts

Log cabins are relatively difficult to maintain compared to a traditional house. That’s because log cabins require regular upkeep and care that can include refinishing and corncob blasting, a process similar to sandblasting that shoots ground-up corncob with compressed air.

Yes, particularly handy DIYers can build their own storm shelter, especially when using a prefabricated kit and an existing space. However, it is a large project that can take several weeks, requiring significant manual labor and heavy equipment. For these reasons, hiring a professional is often recommended. You should always leave certain jobs to a pro, such as installing an underground shelter, projects requiring site excavation, or any custom-designed structures. These types of builds are complex, labor-intensive, and can cost more in the long run if not executed properly.

Building permits serve a few purposes, the most important of which is to keep you and the people around you safe by ensuring your contractor does work safely and to code. Permits also help your municipality tax your property appropriately, as taxes are based on land improvements and the upgrades you make to your home. Finally, permits ensure your project won’t have a negative impact on the environment or your neighbors.

Outdoor kitchens enhance entertainment space, increase home value, and provide convenient cooking in outdoor settings.

The time it takes to build a cinder block storm shelter depends on various factors, such as size, complexity, and weather conditions. Generally, construction can take anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months. Proper planning, obtaining permits, hiccups in the building process, and finishing touches all contribute to the timeline.

While it may require some patience, the end result will be a reliable and secure shelter ready to protect you and your loved ones during severe weather events.
