"I needed a professional to paint the exterior of my multi level home in Grass Valley. A good friend who is a builder, referred us to Jason the owner of JPS Painting. Jason promptly came out and was courteous and very professional and gave us many options to consider. The bid JPS produced was very detailed and complete. Jason started the job on time, he and his crew are true pro's. They took time to answer any questions and concerns and were very considerate. I feel that we were very fortunate in that, out of all the bids and contractors we got the best!!! The attention to detail, the quality of the crew of painters and the price were all OUTSTANDING! JPS is my painting contractor of choice going forward, I am passing JPS on to all my contact's and friend."

Basement Waterproofing questions, answered by experts

When considering finishing your basement, take into account a few pros and cons:

Pros

  • Can increase the value of your home

  • Separate space from the rest of the house

  • Customize and personalize the basement to suit your needs and style

  • Increase the amount of living space in your home

Cons

  • May not regain enough value to cover the cost of finishing

  • Lack of natural light if it’s below ground level

  • Moisture or flooding can cause costly damage

  • Installing plumbing and electrical can be messy and costly

In some circumstances, foundation refacing or repair may be a better option for your home than sealing a foundation. It’s always a good idea to take steps to prevent moisture problems in your foundation, but if there are any structural concerns, those will usually need to be fixed first. When dealing with foundation issues, it’s a good idea to get a professional opinion so you can avoid bigger problems down the road.

Sandbags are the most common and efficient way to create a flood barrier at home. Some local authorities pass them around to homes before the risk of a flood. Otherwise, you can use flood-proof house materials, like burlap or woven plastic bags, to make sandbags and fill them with sand or cat litter. Make sure that when you stack them, they’re tightly laid on top of each other, creating the effect of a firm wall against accumulating water.

Basements with persistent moisture problems or flooding shouldn’t be finished until the moisture issues have been fixed. In addition, if your foundation is cracked, you have unmitigated radon levels, or you have asbestos or lead pipes, remediate the underlying problem before finishing your basement. Turning a basement into living space before fixing these issues can lead to serious health risks or structural damage.

As the first layer of water protection for your roof deck and the building materials below, underlayment is designed to prevent water damage, so it’s okay if it gets wet. However, you shouldn’t rely solely on underlayment for protection. If rain interrupts your roof project and you have all of the underlayment down, you’ll likely be fine, but you should install shingles over that layer as soon as possible, as long-term exposure can lead to water damage.
