"Davendra is an impressive individual by resume and a real pleasure to work with. He is very professional and knowledgeable, but also did very detailed and complete work which resulted in a permit without changes. He did this promptly for a reasonable price. I would certainly hire him again if I needed a structural engineer."

"I had to remodel my kitchen that was not planned. The Brother & Brother Builders team provided different remodel quotes to update my living space. I am glad I chose this builder because they were so knowledgeable and provided suggestions that increased the functionality of my home. The remodel was on budget and the team, Andres, Jorge and Nir answered all of my questions and concerns. Great group of people to work with."

"I worked with Design Everest (Josh) when I needed to bring to code some unpermitted work on my home that had been altered prior to 1978. Design Everest was prompt to supply drawings of the structural work required. When my contractor found existing conditions that called for the engineers to review their plan, DE was very quick to review those existing conditions, change the plans and write cover letters (twice) to the City inspectors describing and confirming 'as built conditions' met code were sufficient from the original build. I am very happy with the end result, and although I questioned the cost of their bid at the onsite, I believe that what was discovered during construction and with the changes made, the cost turned out to be worth it the expense. I highly recommend using this firm."

"John and his crew at Momentum AE were wonderful from start to finish. John helped me design my first residential home and ADU (accessory dwelling unit) in Santa Cruz. His knowledge of architecture and engineering made the design portion of the home a breeze.

I would recommend Momentum AE to anyone that is looking for an Architect/Engineer/Real Estate Brokerage in Santa Cruz. I can officially say Momentum AE is a one stop shop when it comes to residential or commercial development

Thanks again John!!!!!"

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

You need to hire a structural engineer when building or modifying any component with a structural load in your home. Common situations where you would need a structural engineer include home inspections when buying or selling a home, investigating possible issues with your foundation, beams, load-bearing walls, or chimneys, breaking ground on a new home or structure on your property, and renovating an old part of your home that could threaten any structural integrity. Home additions and bump-outs also require an engineer.

The best way to determine if ceiling cracks are structural is to hire a ceiling contractor to inspect the cracks and provide a professional opinion. That said, you might be able to make an educated guess based on the size and appearance of the crack. Larger cracks, cracks accompanied by sagging or discoloration, and cracks that travel from the ceiling down the walls are all signs of structural issues.

Structural engineers can perform various inspections on different structures in your home. These inspections usually include a report detailing the engineer’s findings and recommendations for repairs so you can determine your next course of action for repairs, replacements, or new builds. Some of the most common structural engineering reports include:

  • Full home inspection: $350–$1,000

  • Foundation: $300–$800

  • Load-bearing walls: $300–$1,000

  • Roof: $150–$600

  • Chimney: $200–$500

Most load-bearing walls are exterior, though they can also be interior.

Yes, you can put a doorway in a structural wall; in fact, most exterior doors are set into structural walls. The project is a little more challenging than installing a door in a non-load-bearing wall because you need a structural engineer to assess the wall and make sure it’s safe to create a wall opening. Your engineer’s report will include instructions for your contractor on how and where to install additional supports, like steel headers above the door, to distribute the weight above to the wall on either side of the door.
