Apologies in advance for the length of this review. In May of 2016 I contacted Cuevas (largely because of the reviews on Angie's List) and asked for an estimate for two new gates and removal of the old ones. We wanted very high quality wood in order to get extremely nice-looking gates (and we were prepared to pay accordingly). Fidel came out, got the design specs and produced a reasonable proposal, although some of the details such as the type of wood were not clearly specified. In the end, we decided we weren't ready to proceed as we wanted to review design decisions and look more extensively for gates around town that seemed like what we wanted. It wasn't until January of this year (2017) that I was ready to restart the project, so I called Cuevas again. Fidel came out and I explained that although we had been thinking about redwood previously we wanted to use clear red cedar, and I emphasized the need to have very nice looking gates that would never sag. I thought he would produce a new bid, and was surprised when he made a comment about using the old bid. A few days later I got a call from Fidel saying his crew could start on Friday, Jan. 24. I told him we would be out of town so we agreed to start on the following Friday, March 3. I expected this would give them the opportunity to prepare a more detailed proposal. While we were out of town, we found a gate company in Oregon that would pre-make and ship exactly the sort of gates we were looking for. Since we were returning to town on Tuesday, Jan. 28, I knew I would have time to contact Cuevas and cancel the order -- so far nothing had been paid for and, as noted, I was still expecting a revised bid. Imagine our surprise, then, when we arrived back from the airport on the 28th to find the Cuevas crew on our property (no one had been at the house while we were away) with the old gates removed and work started on posts for the new ones. I had never been asked for, much less granted, permission for them to start, nor would I have done so unless I was going to be there. Cuevas had essentially (in my opinion) trespassed on our property and proceeded to do work I had not approved -- and managed to damage some of the plants in our garden along the way. I told the crew to please stop and contact their supervisor, and I explained to the supervisor that I was extremely upset at what they had done, that I was stopping work then and there, and the crew should load the materials they had unloaded back onto their truck and leave. I indicated that, although I did not authorized them to remove and dispose of the old gates or to install new posts, it was work that was already done and which had value to me, so I agreed to pay for it. Cuevas later sent me a bill for $300 for this work, and the bill has been paid. In my mind, this is far more than an unfortunate lack of communication. Whatever Cuevas thought my intentions were, it was entirely unacceptable to assume they could (1) come onto my property without permission and (2) engage in work I had not authorized, including demolition and removal of my existing gates. I don't know what they would have done if I said we had decided to keep the old gates after all! Altogether it was a very unpleasant experience.
