"Brannick Painting just finished a complete exterior repaint of our house in El Cerrito, including staining our deck. Patrick and his team were wonderful to work with. Patrick helped us with color selection, painting large sheets of posterboard with several colors we considered, so we could hold them up to the house in different lighting to see how they would look when finished. we have heard from others that they had small swatches painted on their house and Patrick’s approach is so much more helpful. Patrick is also extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of preparation and painting. We have an old stucco house that needed a lot of detailed preparation. His crew is very experienced, and they did an excellent job repairing and preparing all of the cracks and blemishes on our house. We are very happy with the final product. We highly recommend using Brannick Painting."

"We hired Juan and his crew to re-stain our kitchen and stair rails. Juan was very quick to respond to our quote and was able to accommodate us before the holidays. He was upfront with expectations and explained the staining process. I was very nervous about the change in color but Juan was able to put my nerves at ease and provided me different stain samples. His crew was very professional and hardworking. Juan was always in communication with me and took care of any concerns that may have come up. We felt that our satisfaction was a top priority for him. We loved the finished product and our house looks beautiful. Then the kitchen is beautiful and the stair rails make the whole house brighter. We are so happy we chose to work with him. I would highly recommend hiring Juan for your painting project needs."

"Atiba and Ati at Finish Coat paint are by far the best contractors we have ever worked with. We have had some nightmare experiences with contractors, so we were hesitant to even do another job but we really needed our interior painted. They responded quickly when first contacted. They are professional. The communication is beyond excellent. We hired them to paint 3 bedrooms and retexture and finish a ceiling. They're work was so great, we expanded the job to include our downstairs. Our house looks beautiful, we couldn't be happier with their work. They did an amazing job and we will definitely be using them again for any future painting projects."

Small jobs welcome

"This father and son team did an excellent job on staining my redwood deck and painting the entire outside of my home. I feel fortunate to be able to find truly professional painters that change a fair price for their work. I would not hesitate to recommend them to family and friends. Good people and excellent workmanship all at a very competitive price. Thank you Mark and Josh."

Painting questions, answered by experts

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.

Shadowbox fence maintenance depends on the material. But for wood shadowbox fences, maintenance typically includes annual cleaning to prevent mold growth, resealing or staining every two to three years, and promptly replacing any damaged or rotted boards. Vinyl fencing, on the other hand, typically only requires annual cleaning with a hose to maintain its appearance.

While the answer varies based on weather, 10 a.m. is a good time to start painting. The dew will have dried, meaning there’s no moisture on the house, and the temperature will likely be moderate and the sunlight less direct. Starting mid-morning should also give you enough daylight and pleasant weather to work on the job for several hours.

Staining a wood fence isn’t guaranteed to prevent warping, but it can help. Plus, it’s a beginner-friendly DIY project that you can finish in a few days. If you want to try it, you’ll start by stripping it of any old stain or paint, then sanding it. After that, you’ll clean it and spot-treat any mold or mildew. When it’s dry, you can apply the stain.

DIY is possible but presents risks of uneven surfaces or improper adhesion; professionals offer expertise to ensure a lasting finish.
