Painting your home exterior costs $1,400 to $6,000. The actual price will depend on many factors like the size of your home, what kind of paint you use, and the siding type. Most Mediterranean homes have stucco siding, but yours may have a different material. You should also account for other add-ons like painting the trim, garage, porch, gutters, deck, and more.

First off, take a breath. The good news is that interior paint, especially when used outside, won’t harm your health. The bad news is that you’re going to have to reapply the proper exterior paint at some point in the not-so-distant future. Otherwise the current coat will chip, crack, and fade, or worse, develop mold or an insect infestation without remediation.

Use flat paint in the rooms that don’t need a lot of cleaning. Flat paint works well in bedrooms, where there is low human traffic, and having the walls soak up light keeps the look and vibe calm. Flat paint also hides imperfections, so if you spot a crack, dent, or patch in your wall, choose flat paint over something shinier.

If you want your paint to have a smooth finish, the technique you use is very important. Keep your brush at a 90-degree angle while applying the paint and feather as you go. Between coats, sand the wall lightly using a very high grit sand sponge of at least 220 grit.

In most cases, you’ll need two coats of paint to ensure proper coverage. If you put down a coat of primer first, you could get away with a single coat of paint, but you’ll likely still need two coats. The only exception would be if you’re painting with a light color over a dark color, in which case you may need three or four coats of paint to ensure the dark color doesn’t show through the new paint.
