I interviewed several contractors before going with Mike on two big projects, a garage-ADU conversion and a major remodel+structural modification. Some contractors would want you to pay them for an estimate/work-breakdown - look, I'm an engineer, I've worked in consulting, I would never ask a potential client to pay for my time to work up a proposal. It's part of doing business. Other contractors would just give you a $/sq ft price, not taking into account specific finishes or materials of construction.
