"I would like to say how pleased we were with the work Miller Roofing Services did for us but “pleased” just doesn’t cut it — we were totally impressed, as were a number of our neighbors who observed the workers over the course of the two days. Mark, the supervisor, and his 6 or 7-man** crew were timely, professional, well-organized, well-trained, well-supervised, accommodating, friendly, and seemingly inexhaustible. And their clean-up was impeccable. Had it not been for couple of old underlayment remnants caught in the tree canopy along the side of the house, we would never have known any roofing work had been done. We will gladly recommend Miller Roofing Services to my neighbors...and to anyone else who asks. **They never lit long enough for me to get an accurate head count. Always on the move, always working."

"J D Jones Roof Crafters did a great job fixing my roof leak, resealing my ridge transitions, cleaning the debris from my cricket area near my garage, installing collars on vent pipes, and removing dry-rot from barge rafters. Customer Service was great. Thank you!"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

The proper specifications for furring strips can vary, so you should always consult the roofing manufacturer's guidelines or your roofer. However, general recommendations are as follows:

  • Thickness: Furring strips are typically 1 to 1-1/2 inches thick, meaning standard 1-by or 2-by lumber works well. In areas with extreme winds, a thinner strip may be preferred to limit how much air can get under the roof and cause uplift. A thicker strip can add slightly more insulation but will also increase installation costs.

  • Spacing: The recommended spacing for furring strips is between 12 and 24 inches apart on center. Proper spacing is crucial for ensuring good airflow, adequate drainage, noise reduction, and better energy efficiency. The ideal spacing can depend on the roof's pitch and the specific type of metal roofing being installed.

Sticky shoes help, but you shouldn't be walking on the steel roof— let the pros do that. it's dangerous enough to walk on asphalt shingled roofs which have quite a bit of texture. Stone coating adds a lot of grip, but it still doesn't lock your foot down, so if you absolutely have to be on the roof, make sure you’re secured in another way, like with the harness and rope.

Generally, hailstones that are one inch in diameter or larger can cause significant damage to a roof. However, smaller hail can also cause damage, particularly when accompanied by strong winds, if it strikes an aging or poorly maintained roof, or if hailstorms are frequent in your area. Hail that is ¼ inch (pea-sized) or smaller poses a minimal risk of immediate, permanent damage, but cumulative impacts can cause deterioration over time. The extent of the damage also depends on the roofing material; hail-resistant tiles like slate or certain types of asphalt shingles can withstand impacts better than other materials. If you are concerned about potential damage after a storm, it is always a good idea to have a professional roofer conduct an inspection.

Roofing jobs can be expensive due to the required materials and the dangerous nature of the labor. The cost to repair a roof ranges from $390 to $1,920, with an average cost of $1,150, depending on what kind of roof you have and any accessibility concerns. Replacing a roof is much more expensive at $5,890 to $12,800.

The formula for calculating how many squares of roofing you need is pretty easy. Take the total amount of square footage and divide it by 100. With this formula in mind, a 2,000-square-foot roof would require 20 squares of roofing material to adequately cover it.
