"Dean Miller was extremely responsive, which is especially important when you have a leaky roof!! He came in the evening, inspected my roof and showed me the problem firsthand. He even stayed after dark to explain options on how to fix the leak with me and my wife. Dean fixed the leak and performed a full roof tune up quickly and for a great price. I highly recommend Miller Roofing Services. Should I have a roofing problem in future I will be calling Dean again. Thank you Doug"

"I hired MAG Roofing, a local family-owned business, to inspect and power-wash my roof, as well as to clean the valleys. I am very impressed with the work they did. They installed 10 tiles, power-washed the entire roof, and cleaned the valleys, as agreed. Power-washing is a time-consuming effort but they were diligent in completing the job. That work resulted in debris (mostly dirt and moss) falling around the perimeter of the house. They did a great job cleaning up that debris. My roof looks like new!! Thank you MAG Roofing!"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Yes, an underlayment is required for metal roofs, especially when installed over an indoor residential living space. This underlayment acts as a protective barrier between the metal roofing and the roof deck. Common materials include tar, asphalt felt, or woven synthetic polymers. Depending on local building codes, existing shingles in good condition may also suffice. A quality underlayment is crucial as it provides protection against water intrusion, improves energy efficiency through insulation, helps absorb sound, and ultimately extends the lifespan of your roof.

Some homes, like those with flat roofs, may not have eaves at all. Some contemporary-style homes also lack eaves, although many may have abbreviated eaves to divert water and protect the walls and foundation. Homes without eaves often have specific types of gutters affixed directly to the edge of the roof to provide adequate drainage.

A solar roof can replace an existing roof. Solar panels fit on top of traditional roofs. In contrast, solar roofs that contain photovoltaic (PV) materials, like solar shingles and solar tiles, are standalone roofing systems installed as a main roof. In some cases, installers can place them on existing roofs and as part of new construction. Carefully assess and choose the right type of solar roof replacement for your home and needs.

EPDM roofing is a single-ply roofing material made of rubber, and a professional will install it in a single sheet and seal the seams. Built-up roofing (BUR) consists of multiple layers made from asphalt, adhesives, and roofing felt. A professional will construct the layers of BUR on-site. EPDM is easier to repair and has better resistance to extreme temperatures, while BUR is more fire-resistant and affordable.

The best material to sheath a roof will depend on your budget and if you require the strength of more robust materials. For most homes, the added strength is unnecessary, and oriented strand board, or OSB, makes sense. It’s inexpensive and robust enough for most roof types. Another popular but slightly more expensive option is plywood.
