"I first contacted Valley to get a quote on how much it would cost to get air conditioning installed. I live in an older town home that is approximately 1100 sq. ft. They sent someone out to take a look and see what was involved. He was very professional and explained what was involved including getting permits from the city. He quoted the amount and provided me with an invoice. I contacted them 3 months later to say I was ready for the install. The installation turned out to be quite challenging due to the way my home is constructed, but Valley made it work. The service person had to stay a few hours longer but I wasn't charged anything extra for it. They stuck with the amount of the estimate that was quoted. It's only been a couple of months since the install, but I have to say my only complaint at this point is how cold it gets when I turn on the air. But that's a nice problem to have. :)"

"I got a call from them within 2 minutes of requesting a quote. They had a very friendly, competent and quick-working tech at the house within 3 hrs or so, and he had the needed replacement component in his truck. He was in and out in about 30 minutes -- I can't imagine anyone doing the job any quicker/better or less intrusively! My new go-to guys for any future HVAC service needs!"

"I found Alanis Air through Angi/Home Advisor because we were having HVAC issues in our new home. Our 4 year old system would turn on for only a few minutes and then stop. I believed it was a wiring issue, but it happened to be a short in the condenser. Alanis Air replaced the parts promptly. I was also concerned that part of our remodeled house could be cooled better.. So after exploring options (i.e. adding a second system, ductwork redesign, adding a mini split ceiling cassette, or wall mount) we decided to go with a Fujitsu wall mount. Alanis Air also carved and framed out an attic access in our closet where the remodelers shouldâ  ve put one but didnâ  t. They patched and painted free of charge and did a great job. I highly recommend them."

"I had a recent experience with A-1 Heating & Cooling and I have to say they bring their A-game to any job they plan to do. I took 3 months to hire them, and they were very persistent and worked with my budget, which made me feel like they really cared about fulfilling my needs and care to get my business. Work was done as discussed, timing was on point. Goal was to get an AC installed and move the heater up to the attic. It took them 3 days to finish this job, but there was no interruption in the hallway, everything was kept clean, and it was done in a very honest and respectful manner. I highly recommend this pro, and also want to give a shout-out to Hyman Kang, who was eager to convince me to choose them. Thank you!"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Some HVAC systems tend to use R410A refrigerant, although if you have an older model it may be using R22. R22 is banned due to its harmful environmental and health impacts, and it is a sign that your AC unit is old enough to consider a replacement and the significant efficiency gains that could come with it.

If your whole house is cold that’s one thing, but what if you only have a few rooms that are cold? First, you need to determine why this may be happening. A good place to start is to investigate the potential causes listed in this article—heat transfer, airflow, thermostat problems, humidity, and insulation. Once you’ve narrowed down the issue, you’d apply the same principles to the cold rooms as you would to the entire home.

Not if you have a standard unit. Because portable AC units actually work to dehumidify the room, you’ll likely need to drain the unit from time to time—but you won’t have to put water into it. There is, however, another type of air conditioner called a swamp cooler that requires water to operate. If you have a swamp cooler, you may need to fill a reservoir with water and potentially ice. But a swamp cooler is different from a standard portable AC unit.

Your heating and cooling systems cost you the most on your electric bill and make up 50% of your bill on average. Your washing machine, dryer, oven, and stove contribute significantly to your electric bill as well. Lights, fans, and smaller electronics add up, but aren’t the biggest energy consumers. You can reduce your power usage by setting optimal temperatures on your thermostat and investing in energy-efficient appliances.

Your central A/C unit should be professionally serviced and inspected at least once a year to ensure it operates properly and efficiently. This is best done before the peak cooling season. A full-service inspection by a qualified pro will typically include checking safety components for issues like carbon monoxide leaks, verifying cooling components and coolant levels, and inspecting electrical parts like fuses and wiring. Regular servicing enhances efficiency, mitigates potential problems, and maintains optimal performance. Because AC systems contain hazardous refrigerant, professional handling is essential.
